Retired presented his version of why older people don’t get vaccinated: Veryga responded after the call

“I want to say why, in my opinion, older people in Lithuania don’t want to get vaccinated. They don’t want to get vaccinated because a person doesn’t want to live long and be poor. We, the elderly, are having a hard time living. Young and active people should be vaccinated, “said Ms Dalia, who called the program” Radio of the day “” Question of the day. “

Aurelijus Veryga, a former health minister and parliamentarian for the Lithuanian Peasants’ Green Union, who participated in the program, responded philosophically to the call.

“With all due respect to the caller, I would disagree, and I don’t think we should decide who needs and who doesn’t need to live. I really know a lot of older people who enjoy life every day and don’t want to die, much earlier. Of course, such an event will happen to everyone one day, but it is definitely better later than before, ”said A. Veryga.

According to the politician, the logic in this case should not be based on a discussion of who wants or does not want to live.

“People who can be saved must be vaccinated first. These are the ones most at risk, and it is still the elderly and people who have many diseases,” said A. Veryga.

If the money has to be spent on resuscitation, there will be no money left for prosthetics

Epidemiologist Paul Gradeck also responded to the listener’s call, just in a more practical way, recalling that medical care, which is most often provided to unvaccinated people, is expensive.

“If we spend that money on resuscitation, on intensive care beds, then it is not enough for prosthetics, which improves both quality and life. The main thing – the quality, because often people, why do not want to live?

Because that life after seventy no longer becomes quality, not for any economic reason, but because a person cannot walk a hundred meters, because all his joints are worn out. Medicine can help in this place, but we have limited resources.

If we use limited resources where there are protective measures, it does not stop where there are no other measures, ”explained P. Gradeckas.

The epidemiologist did not agree that people do not want to live in Lithuania.

“The flow of people into primary health care and inpatient services in Lithuania indicates something else: that people are very eager to live, regardless of their health status. The use of health services in Lithuania, depending on the sector (…), is between one and a half and two and a half times higher than the average of the European Union. We are both sicker and have better access, (…) and we really want to live and use medical care “, said Gradeck .

It is said that he is treated like a Scandinavian.

Jurgita Sejonienė, a member of the Seimas of the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union (TS-LKD) faction, believes that this year it will not be necessary to close as strictly as before.

“The tactics chosen by the government are based on less aggressive measures (wearing masks), applying those measures gradually, hoping that together with vaccination, with softer measures, the situation will be handled,” said J. Sejonienė.

For people who want to live as freely as Scandinavians, the parliamentarian has advised and acted like Scandinavians who listen to recommendations, and where vaccination rates for the elderly are sky high.

“Meanwhile, Lithuanians discourage older people from getting vaccinated. Even now we know that there is a pilot project where a nurse goes home, some of those older adults call their younger relatives and advise them not to get vaccinated in any way ”, J. Sejonienė spoke about the reality not returned in our country.

At the same time, the parliamentarian noted that the availability of the vaccine in Lithuania is one of the best in Europe.

“We have many vaccination points, vaccinations, days without registration, it is very easy for those who want to be vaccinated. We also need conscience, goodwill from the people themselves. Younger people should not discourage, but simply urge older people to get vaccinated, ”said J. Sejonienė.

Additional measures will be taken for the virus.

In an informal meeting on Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers decided on the mandatory use of masks indoors. Prime Minister I. Šimonytė already said on Tuesday that a quarantine regime should be introduced because of this, as recommendations are only possible during an emergency.

Just before the Government meeting, Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys also stated that changes can also await events in closed spaces.

Education, Science and Sports Minister Jurgita Šiugždinienė said the self-isolation procedure in educational institutions will be changed.

When asked about the vaccination of the elderly, after the government meeting, the Health Minister emphasized that nurses with mobile correspondents are already going not only in Trakai, but also in Šilalė, Skuodas and Zarasai districts. This gives older people the opportunity to get vaccinated at home, BNS wrote.

“That wave can continue to develop,” said the minister.

According to A. Dulkis, in preparation for vaccination in Vilnius polyclinics from October, vaccines are already distributed to these health institutions.
“Vaccines are moving to GPs and other polyclinics across the country,” the minister said.

Earlier, the ministry stated that other municipalities would be invited to contribute to the polyclinic vaccination initiative after evaluating the Vilnius experience.

Among other things, A. Dulkys emphasized that e-health currently provides an opportunity for a family doctor to see older people who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

“It will provide the opportunity to call, consult and advise,” the minister said.

According to him, it is planned to increase the benefit for family doctors from 5 to 15 euros for a patient older than 75 years sent for vaccination.
