Recent surveys show that after the end of the quarantine, residents of the country’s three largest cities have the most favorable opinion of Kaunas city mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis (47% favorable, 35% unfavorable).

At that time, the mayor of Klaipeda, Vytautas Grubliauskas, was favorably evaluated by 36 percent. 32% of the respondents. Remigijus Šimašius, the mayor of Vilnius, received the most unfavorable evaluations (38% favorably and 47% unfavorably).

According to a survey conducted by the market research and public opinion company Baltijos tyrimai from June 15 to 25, up to eight in ten (83%) surveyed Kaunas residents rated V. Matijošaitis positive, and a sixth (16%) rated it unfavorably. More than half (56%) of those surveyed in Klaipeda rated the mayor V. Grubliauskas favorably, 15%. they rated it unfavorably and three out of ten (29%) had no opinion on it. The mayor of the capital, R. Šimašius, was rated favorably by every second (49%) resident of Vilnius, and four out of ten (41%) are currently rated unfavorably.

R. Urbonaitė: the survey is surprising

Rima Urbonaitė, a professor at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), noted that V. Matijošaitis’ assessment differs significantly between the city of Kaunas and the entire population of the country. The political scientist also remembers that V. Matijošaitis, one of the three mayors of the city, acted very little in public space during the quarantine.

“I have a question about the particularly good assessment of V. Matijošaitis in Kaunas. Another survey needs to be conducted to determine if such popularity of the mayor, which was very limited during the quarantine, should be conducted. In other words, this survey is surprising precisely because we have V. Matijošaitis’ super good rating in Kaunas that no politician can boast about today. We should see if this trend continues, “he told Eltai.

According to her, the results are very dissonant among the respondents from the city of Kaunas and the entire population of Lithuania.

“We see a big difference between the way Kaunas residents and Lithuanian residents in general evaluate V. Matijošaitis. It seems that the image of V. Matijošaitis in Lithuania as a whole is significantly different from the image of Kaunas. Of course, Kaunas residents can see certain actions in the city and tend to welcome them. It is difficult to say how the qualification of all the inhabitants of the country was formed due to the mayor of Kaunas, because V. Matijošaitis was criticized in the public space during the quarantine for not being in the public space and there are no speeches, except that we know that V Matijošaitis has always used it for fishing. Therefore, the opinion of the whole of Lithuania on the mayor and the evaluation of a city is very dissonant, ”said R. Urbonaitė.

Matthew doesn’t need much effort to look good in the context of past mayors. The city did not fare well with previous mayors.

On the other hand, the political scientist points out that the mayor of Kaunas does not need much effort to look good in the context of previous mayors.

“Matijošaitis does not take much effort to look good in the context of previous mayors. The city did not fare well with previous mayors. V. Matijošaitis can be well appreciated without much effort. Only Kaunas residents, if they They compare with the previous mayors, they see some effort, result and they can already be happy, because Kaunas really had no luck with the previous mayors. When a person comes after Kupčinskas and previous others, it is definitely not so difficult to shine. Here’s how to be the best student in the class. If the two doubles, you have four and you look good, you can say that you are the best student in the class, “said R. Urbonaitė.

R. Urbonaitė also affirms that after the quarantine, the three cities value their mayors more favorably.

“All the mayors in their cities have more favorable than unfavorable opinions. This shows that during the quarantine, the mayors were able to exceed their ranking, and now they have more confidence and favorable opinions than unfavorable,” he said.

According to her, the favorable evaluation of R. Šimašius after the quarantine increased due to the fact that the mayor was very active during the quarantine.

“It seems that after the coronavirus crisis, Vilna residents began to appreciate R. Šimašiai better, because he was really very active.” We have seen a lot of R. Šimašius. We saw the mayor of the capital confront the Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga and it seems that for the residents of Vilnius the management of the coronavirus in the city turned out to be appropriate and everything was done well enough (…) At that time V. Grubliauskas the population differs by only 4%, which is certainly very little. This is very interesting, “said R. Urbonaitė.
