Professor Aurelija Žvirblienė, Director of the Department of Immunology and Cell Biology at the Vilnius University Center for Life Sciences, notes that various Covid-19 vaccines are now being developed in various ways around the world. However, not all vaccines are the same.
“There is a paradoxical situation where traditional and well-known vaccine methods, such as virus decontamination, are far behind in terms of that vaccine. There is only one manufacturer in Europe and the US that produces this type of vaccine. Only now is he completing the first phase of clinical trials, ”A. Žvirblienė told reporters on Monday.
He points out that the market is currently dominated by little known and unproven vaccine formats, such as RNA vaccines or DNA virus vaccines.
“We heard that the Pfizer vaccine, which was the first to complete clinical trials and is in the process of being registered, is a completely innovative type of vaccine that has not been used in medicine until now.
This vaccine works in such a way that the RNA molecule first enters our cell, where a viral protein is produced and produces a response. The task will be to explain how vaccines work and what their differences are, ”said A. Žvirblienė.
The Pfizer vaccine registration should be completed by the last days of December and arrive in Lithuania shortly thereafter. According to A. Žvirblienė, there is no other way to beat Covid-19, only a vaccine.
“If we want to live differently from how we live now, then we have to look for weapons to combat this virus. The most effective weapon is a vaccine. We know this from the history of infectious diseases. Unfortunately, the vaccine is the only way, ”emphasized A. Žvirblienė.
According to her, for society to develop immunity to the coronavirus, 70% should be vaccinated in theory. Lithuanian population.
“We have to take into account that many people are sick and in the first months when the vaccines arrive, they will not be the first priority, because they will have resistance for several months,” added A. Žvirblienė.
Record number of deaths
During the last day, a record number of people died from Covid-19 in Lithuania – 38. A total of 863 people died from Covid-19 in the country, and another 423 – due to other reasons.
In addition, last day 1,432 new coronavirus infections were confirmed and 2,591 people recovered.
