November 1, All Saints’ Day, has long been a non-working day, but this year it will be Sunday. Since 2020 and November 2 are non-business days, residents will still have a long weekend that runs from Saturday to Monday inclusive.
The decision was made in 2019.
Late as a day of unemployment was already legalized in 2019, when the Seimas adopted an amendment to the Labor Code presented by members of the Lithuanian Polish Electoral Action Christian Family Union faction.
“2006 Lithuania has ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Intangible Cultural Heritage, according to which it is All Saints’ Day that should be given special status as a traditional celebration of the honor of the dead, characterized by its special uniqueness and vitality.
Our state is responsible for its preservation, and therefore must allow people to appreciate the ancient traditions of the holiday. The Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture has also proposed adding late holidays to the list of non-working days, ”the initiators of the proposal said in a press release.
In the explanatory memorandum, the initiators stated that All Souls’ Day must be a day of unemployment, because otherwise, the people of Lithuania cannot visit the graves of their loved ones on November 2.
“The two festivities combined in one day lose their true meaning and purpose, while at the same time losing the unique tradition of honoring the dead,” the letter says.
5 long weekends a year
Since this year is Late Day in Lithuania, residents were able to even enjoy five long weekends.
The first long weekend was in April, celebrating Easter, as the second day of Easter was April 13. – Monday, so this day was free.
In a long weekend we were able to enjoy May 1, the anniversary of International Labor Day, which was Friday.
July 6: This year’s King Mindaugas coronation day was Monday, so residents also had three days off in a row.
Residents look forward to two more long weekends. As mentioned, we will have three days off at the beginning of November, and the longest weekend in 2020 will be during the Christmas period: we will be able to enjoy four days off.
At present, a total of 13 state holidays have been announced in Lithuania, some of them are celebrated on Sundays.
