Registration tax: who will pay and who can avoid it?

[ad_1]

Starting July 1, car owners will be required to pay a corresponding tax based on the vehicle’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. True, some will avoid it.

Specialists from the state-owned company Regitra have indicated that this tax must be paid by each driver of the vehicle when registering a new car imported into Lithuania from a foreign country or when re-registering a vehicle already registered in Lithuania with CO2 emissions. greater than 130 g / km.

This means that every time, both when changing the owner of a car and when registering a car that is not used in Lithuania, its drivers will have to pay from 13.5 Eur if the vehicle exceeds the established CO2 standard. up to 540 euros, depending on the type of fuel.

The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a car can be seen in section V.7 of your registration certificate. If the value is not specified in this column, Regitra employees will search for equivalent vehicles that are equivalent to the registered vehicle by type, variant, or version, and their technical data will be used to calculate the median of that data. If this is not possible, it will be calculated according to the formulas provided by law, using the mass of the car (kg), the maximum engine power (kW) and the type of gearbox (mechanical, automatic).

Admittedly, this tax will not apply to historic cars with historical license plates issued, cars registered when the owner doesn’t change (for example, after paying the car lease (when the person was designated as their manager), changing the name of the person, request a duplicate registration certificate instead of lost or damaged vehicles, etc.) and re-exported. In the latter case, the fee must be paid, but after 90 days of cancellation of the registration, departure and request for refund, the money will be returned to the bank account specified in the request within 20 business days.
