Record number of new cases: 2,450 people infected every day

2,450 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Lithuania on Wednesday, 17 people died from coronavirus, Statistics Lithuania reported on Thursday.

Added: few cases investigated.

This is the highest number of new cases per day since the start of a pandemic.

Since the start of the pandemic, 67,066 people have been infected with COVID-19 in the country and 39,377 people remain ill.

A total of 564 people died from coronavirus in Lithuania and 289 people died from other causes.

1,430 people recovered in the last day, 26,836 are believed to have recovered since the start of the pandemic.

On Wednesday, 12,406 samples were tested for suspected coronavirus, bringing the total number of samples tested since the start of the pandemic to 1,290,467.

Situation in hospitals

1,949 COVID-19 patients are being treated in hospitals, 149 of them in resuscitation, Statistics Lithuania said Thursday.

1,017 patients need oxygen, 83 people are covered by artificial lung ventilation.

Roughly more than half of hospital beds are currently occupied: 9,144 out of 16,660.

Of the 672 resuscitation beds, just over half were occupied, 395. Of the 624 beds that can be used for artificial lung ventilation, 235 are occupied, of the 6,207 occupied oxygen beds, 2,275.

Few cases have been investigated

The National Center for Public Health (NVSC) reported yesterday that it had epidemiologically diagnosed only 672 cases identified due to technical failures. The results of 1,178 tests entered the NVSC information system late at night due to technical problems.

New outbreaks have been identified in residences in the last day and the disease continues to spread in hospitals.

There were 579 new cases in Kaunas, 564 in Vilnius, 333 in Klaipėda, 264 in Šiauliai, 214 in Panevėžys, 121 in Telšiai, 112 in Alytus, 99 in Utena, 96 in Marijampolė, and 46 in Tauragė counties.

Another 22 cases have not yet been assigned to any region of the country due to lack of information.
