Quarantine in Klaipeda: restrictions force you to hold your head

The quarantine introduced in Klaipeda as of tomorrow Wednesday is already causing a lot of confusion, as some restrictions seem difficult to implement.

There is confusion on the buses

Of particular concern is the statement that public transport must maintain a meter distance between passengers and allow only seats.

“Now it really seems like the passenger getting on the bus has to look around to see if there are seats, and if there aren’t, they have to empty them.” In this way, instruction for public transportation would be taken literally. In fact, we have been arguing with our colleagues from Vilnius and Kaunas since morning and we don’t know how to behave, ”said Andrius Samuilovas, acting director of the public institution Klaipėda Passenger Transport.

He explained that keeping the distance from the subway in the seats means that passengers must sit according to the principle of chess. “This was also the case during the first quarantine, but then it was not forbidden to carry standing passengers, just to maintain distances between them.” In this way we were able to transport 30 to 35 passengers on a bus. If we can no longer carry standing passengers, only 15-18 people will be able to travel on a bus. And such a ban is not logical, because city buses are adapted to carry standing passengers, not suburban buses, where there are significantly more seats than standing places, “said A. Samuilov.

He hoped that by tonight all the nuances of restrictions on public transport would be cleared up and that passengers would be able to carry passengers in full compliance as of Wednesday.

Samuilov estimated that passenger numbers had dropped by a fifth since Monday. Most of it is related to the beginning of school holidays, but according to A. Samuilov, adults have also started to be forced to use public transport.

Will the events have to be canceled?

Klaipeda residents also have questions about whether various events will be able to take place in public places during the quarantine. For example, on October 31, the traditional Pumpkin Festival is planned in the old town of Klaipėda, at the beginning of November, even three fairs must take place in M. Mažvydas Alley. “Events in public places are not mentioned in the Government Resolution announcing the quarantine. However, the government should review its previous resolution on the emergency at its meeting on Wednesday. From the information in the public space, we see that the government tends to ban all events. If such a ban is adopted, then by order of the Director of the Klaip weda Municipal Administration, we will have to revoke the permits issued for events taking place in Klaipėda and not issue new permits, “said Kristina Vintilaitė , Head of the Public Order Department of the Municipality of Klaipėda.

Another instruction related to the introduction of quarantine, relevant to many, is that as of Wednesday it is mandatory to wear protective equipment that covers the nose and mouth in all outdoor areas, both indoors and outdoors. They should also be used by children from 6 years old.

Rapid expansion in companies

From Wednesday, the Klaipėda Municipality will stop serving customers in the form of contact, and it is recommended that all municipal institutions and companies do the same.

“I strongly request all employees of institutions, services and institutions who have to communicate with clients to wear face protection and hand hygiene at all times. Additionally, we have received complaints about misconduct by staff coming to the apartments, such as changing the meters. They come without masks or respirators. If such work cannot be postponed, workers should wear face shields. In addition, they should check if there are no sick or isolated people in the apartment they are going to. This is one of the ways to ensure that there are no coronavirus outbreaks in companies, ”said Raimundas Grigaliūnas, Director of the Klaipėda Department of the National Center for Public Health.

He emphasized that in Klaipėda, the virus is spreading among Klaipėda residents during his communication, as there are only 14 cases of imports since October 1. “Initially, the virus spread only in schools and kindergartens, but now we have 15-18 companies with more than one. case. That is why it is very important that all employees measure the temperature, people must wear protective masks. The control is necessary so that the virus does not spread in companies, because there will be no one to carry out the functions, ”emphasized R. Grigaliūnas.

He regretted that specialists could no longer investigate all new cases of coronavirus detected on a daily basis. “When there were 15-17 cases a day, we managed to investigate them all, and now there are already 70-80 cases a day in the city, it is clear that there will be more. We have already canceled all our planned actions, focusing on the fight against the coronavirus, but we still don’t have time ”, R. Grigaliūnas did not hide.

The quarantine in Klaipeda is introduced at night from Tuesday to Wednesday, starting at midnight. It is currently published until November 11 (inclusive).
