Prosecutor’s Office launches investigation into hate speech and threats to deal with TVRaskevičius

According to the prosecution, investigations were launched into the possible incitement of homosexuals (under article 170 of the Penal Code) and possible threats of death or seriously damaging the health of a person (under article 145 of the Penal Code).

One of the investigations was initiated due to messages and comments posted on Facebook by Seimas member TVRaskevičius, in which people may have publicly incited hatred, incited violence and physically dealt with politicians because of their sexual orientation.

Pre-trial investigations have been initiated to identify the characteristics of the crimes and the possible perpetrators.

The Penal Code provides for various penalties for incitement against any nation, race, ethnicity, religion or other group of people (according to article 170 (2) and (3) of the Penal Code), the most severe of which is imprisonment of up to to three years. Threatening to kill or seriously damage the health of a person (according to article 145 (1) of the Penal Code) poses a threat to public works, a fine, restriction of freedom, detention or imprisonment of up to two years.
