Professor Čaplinskas: The response to coronavirus must be fundamentally changed

Who needs quarantine? It was necessary to prepare the public, the doctors. That is when we admit that we are not ready. If we are not ready and want to self-quarantine again, what else do we have to prepare for and for how long? “Says the teacher in the program” Delfi diena “.

“People need to be able to live normally, only in new circumstances, to understand why masks are needed, and the further away, the more they work remotely. In general, the response to this infection should be changed,” he emphasizes.

According to the professor, the experience of foreign countries shows that those countries that depended the most on family doctors achieved better results.

“It just came to our knowledge then normalize this infection so that everyone can go to their family doctor and so that each family doctor can prescribe both the rapid flu test and the COVID-19 test, ”explains S. Čaplinskas.

“It just came to our knowledge then exclusivenessIt must be the same disease as all the others ”, he adds.

The fact that the public is increasingly skeptical about the virus and the use of protective measures, according to the professor, shows that mistakes were made in regards to the coronavirus from the beginning.

“It just came to our knowledge then. It was not clarified, people were not trained because it was thought that we would control the situation with bans. I think there must be common rules, people need to be educated, they need to be trusted,” says the boss. of ULAC.

Kasiulevičius: the health system is not well prepared

Vytautas Kasiulevičius, a professor at the VU School of Medicine, says the current situation is not surprising and the jump in cases could have been foreseen. He notes that it will be increasingly difficult to control the virus.

“The situation has never been completely controlled. We still do not know how many asymptomatic cases. We believe that they compensate even more than established. Now the coronavirus is entering a phase where it is very difficult to control,” says a doctor at Delfi Day.

In response to the situation, in his opinion, firstly, testing capacity should be increased and quarantine, according to V. Kasiulevičius, would be an effective tool, but would only help in the short term.

“The entire health system is not well prepared, that’s why the quarantine gives us such a good effect. As soon as it is abolished, everything deteriorates for a very simple reason: hospitals were built during the Soviet era, infection control is tragic, ”notes V. Kasiulevičius.

“There are just no physical specialists in infection control, because there are no people who want to work in such a position, they are paid very little. There are no safeguards that are sufficient. In the Santara clinics, we, the family doctors, We do not have a respirator, we wear medical masks every day. <…> Exhaust ventilation is a big problem. Where it is good, the incidence of infections is much lower, “he says.

According to the professor, the problem is that it is not possible to find common solutions in the authorities, following the different opinions of scientists.

“It just came to us then because of the tension between the political forces. Now there is a government that depends on a group of scientists, another group that claims power, other scientists ”, explains V. Kasiulevičius.

“Controlling the spread is a big task. That control consists of many stages. These are not just state decisions, we have to go to the lowest level, society, to promote the use of masks very clearly,” he says.

V. Kasiulevičius does not rule out that Lithuania may even find itself in a situation like Italy in the spring. “It just came to our knowledge then. Take a look at the Czech Republic, Poland,” says the professor on the Delfi Day program.
