“Today we come together to remember and pay tribute to a Lithuanian volunteer who died while doing his duty. It was for the freedom of all of us that a great sacrifice was made for Artūras Sakalauskas,” I. Šimonytė said in the report.
According to her, Artūras joined the ranks of volunteers from his grandfather Antanas Letkauskas, a participant in the fight for Lithuanian independence, a knight of the Order of the Vytis Cross, inheriting courage and faith in noble ideals. During the turbulent days of the August 1991 coup, Artūras Sakalauskas, along with volunteers from the Alytus team, arrived in Vilnius and stood up to defend the Supreme Restorative Council of the Seimas.
“Artūras Sakalauskas died in the convulsions of the Soviet army, two other participants of the resistance were wounded. It is symbolic that Artūras Sakalauskas gave his eternal rest together with Antanas Juozapavičius, who died in 1919 and was the first officer of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in die for the independence of Lithuania.
