The Statistics Department publishes the average retail prices of the most popular products each month. The basket of the most popular goods and services consists of 111 items, and its total average value is approximately € 774.

When ranking the largest cities in the country based on the overall average price of the most popular goods and services, Vilnius is the most expensive to live in. The value of the basket of the most popular goods and services in the capital is 832 EUR.

Other cities are Kaunas (€ 806), Klaipeda (€ 715), Panevezys (€ 707) and Siauliai (€ 649).

However, not necessarily everything is much cheaper in Šiauliai. Residents of Šiauliai also have to pay more for cold water than residents of other large cities. In this city, its cubic meter costs 1.06 euros. The price of cold water in Kaunas is 0.62 EUR per cubic meter, in the port city – 0.86 EUR. In Vilnius and Panevėžys, 0.64 and 0.68 euros each had to be paid for the cold water fight.

Hot water was the most expensive for Klaipeda residents in the fight. They paid EUR 5.29 per cubic meter of hot water, EUR 3.63 for Kaunas residents and EUR 4.24 for Panevėžys residents.

Klaipeda residents also pay more for urban transport use than residents of other cities in the country.
A single bus ticket in the port city costs on average 1 EUR, in Panevėžys – 0.52, in Šiauliai – 0.60, in Kaunas – 0.70, in the capital – 0.78 EUR.

However, a taxi ride would have to be paid mainly in Panevėžys. A taxi ride of up to 5 kilometers during the day in this city in March costs an average of about 4 euros. The cheapest taxi can be covered in Vilnius for the same distance during the day, for an average of 3.34 EUR.

However, in the center of the capital, the most expensive parking in paid places. In March, an average of € 1.23 had to be paid for a car left for one hour in Vilnius, and € 0.30 each in Panevėžys and Šiauliai.

Filling a single tooth with a helium filling in Vilnius also punches the pocket more than in other major cities. In March, the average price for this service in Lithuania was € 52 and in Vilnius € 65.33. The cheapest teeth to fill were Šiauliai (€ 42.90) and Panevėžys (€ 44.71).
When you go to Šiauliai, it is possible to get a cheaper haircut. The average men’s haircut model here costs 12.80 EUR (the price also includes head washing and styling with hair styling tools), and in Vilnius – 16.70 EUR.

In Šiauliai, cheaper and beauty procedures for women. The average haircut price in this city is 17.50 EUR, and in Vilnius and Kaunas it is 23.80 EUR and 23.40 EUR, respectively.

The lunch of the day would also have to be paid more in Klaipėda (on average – 5.70 EUR), it would cost cheaper in Panevėžys – 4.53 EUR, and in Vilnius – 4.71 EUR.

Klaipėda residents would pay more for 70 food groups of certain groups, about 168 EUR. In Panevėžys, a basket of the same product groups would cost 166 EUR. And here in Šiauliai – 156 EUR.

Virginija Jasionienė, Head of the Lithuanian Statistics Price Statistics Division, noted that prices are collected to calculate total changes in consumer prices and prices of individual groups of consumer goods and services, and not to determine their average level. The range of services and products selected for price registration may vary between cities. The cheapest products in the same group can be selected in smaller cities than in large ones. Or, on the contrary, in the absence of competition, the prices of certain services or goods are higher in certain cities than in others.

Of course, a lot also depends on the purchasing power of the population. The average salary registered in the large cities of the country varies a lot. In the capital, in the last quarter of last year, it amounted to 1674 EUR, in Kaunas county – 1534, in Klaipėda – 1457, in Panevėžys – 1316, in Šiauliai – 1301 EUR.
