This week, the Seimas approved amendments to the State Awards Law initiated by President Gitanas Nausėda, expanding the list of winners. 71 Seimas members voted in favor and one abstained.
So far, this award has been given only to mothers who have raised and educated at least five children.
From now on, instead of the award being awarded after giving birth and raising five children, the law will include a more general rule that the medal is awarded “for merit in maternity, paternity, care or well-being” .
The presidency, which initiated the amendments, emphasizes that the amendments do not call into question the purpose of the current provision in the law to reward mothers who have raised more than five children, but rather expand the list of eligible individuals.
It has also been established that the Lithuanian Order of Merit Medal will be awarded to people who glorify the name of Lithuania, as before, as well as to people who have merits in various fields in Lithuania.
According to the adopted amendment, individuals may be awarded for merits in the fields of culture, science, education, business, production, health, social security, war, sports, economics and others.
