According to him, the Department of Statistics is completing the list of almost a thousand best-selling goods and services for next year. There has never been a need to include these goods in the statistical basket in three decades.

“Due to the pandemic, we have added them to our basket and from next year we will set their prices,” says Virginija Jasionienė, director of the Lithuanian Price Statistics Division.

This year, prices are set at 952 positions. Next year, it is already clear that 966 positions will have to be fixed. However, the statistical basket changes even without coronavirus.

“This is a reflection of the fact that Lithuania’s standard of living is growing. People can buy goods and services that they could not before,” says Vytautas Žukauskas, an expert at the Lithuanian Free Market Institute (LFMI).

V. Jasionienė states that both the market and human consumption are expanding. According to her, most of it, about 27 percent. – The basket consists of food, non-alcoholic beverages. Another large group of best-selling products are sanitary products.

When you see the cart, you delete what people no longer buy or buy little. For example, since this year, there have been no live trout in the statistical basket, but organic yogurt has emerged. There will be no CD for language learning in next year’s basket, but a branch is included.
