The Commission’s statement said it had approved drought-tolerant genetically modified wheat.

Argentina is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of wheat exports.

“This is the first worldwide confirmation of the genetic transformation of wheat that leads to tolerance to drought,” said the statement from the National Commission for Science and Technology (CONICET).

“To be commercialized in Argentina, this genetic transformation of wheat must be approved by Brazil, historically the main market for Argentine wheat,” said CONICET.

About 45 percent. Argentine wheat exports in 2019 represented exports to Brazil. Other important markets are Indonesia, Chile and Kenya.

The HB4 drought resistant wheat was developed by the Argentine biotechnology company Bioceres together with the National University and CONICET.

“Now we have to go to the world and convince people that it is very good to be able to create markets for this wheat, which is a leap forward,” said Federico Trucco, director of Bioceres.

However, Trucco acknowledged that it could be difficult to obtain support from Brazil.
