It was officially announced on Tuesday that the Ligue 1 season of the best French soccer league in 2019-2020 will not be extended.
The championship, halted by the coronavirus, was expected to resume in the summer, but the country’s prime minister on Tuesday. Edouard Philippe confirmed that there will be no sporting events in France until at least September.
“The most important sporting events will definitely not take place until at least September. The 2019-2020 soccer season cannot continue,” said E. Philippe
The decision could create even more confusion in the Champions League, as Paris-Saint-Germain already has a place in the quarterfinals and Lyon has not yet finished the eighth series of the final with Juventus.
It is still unclear whether the PSG team with a 12-point lead over the closest pursuers will be declared the French champion.
This is the third European league to end its season. Previously, such decisions were made by the best soccer leagues in Belgium and the Netherlands.
