The provisions of the guidelines aim to establish that the implementation of the 5G connection in Lithuania should start in 2021. By the end of 2020, radio frequencies (channels) should be assigned and announced for auction, by 2022 it should be installed in at least one of the largest cities in Lithuania in terms of population, and by 2023 it should settle in the five largest cities in Lithuania.
By 2025, the 5G connection should be installed in urban areas, on international ground transportation corridors (Via Baltica, Rail Baltica) and other major highways, and on state railways, airports, and seaports.
“5G communication technology would meet the rising expectations of consumers. This is especially important for higher quality communication services and would also contribute to the creation of economic and social benefits for the state. The 5G communication infrastructure is expected to suit many sectors: transport, logistics, health, energy, manufacturing, finance and others, “Transport and Communications Minister Jaroslav Narkevičius said at the government meeting on Wednesday.
According to him, the project will not require funds from the state budget, since it is planned to use financing instruments from the European Union.
The draft resolution prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Communications identifies the Ministries of Environment, Finance, National Defense, Transport, Health, Foreign Affairs, Economy and Innovation and Interior as the ministries responsible for the implementation of the provisions of the guidelines. .
