Up to 4,376 spectators watched the Kaunas “Žalgiris” and Vilnius “Rytas” basketball matches held at the Siemens Arena on Sunday, without hearing calls from the Minister of Health, the head of state-level emergency operations Aurelijus Veryga, to see the competition at home. Not only that, the fans didn’t keep safe distances, and some of their matches were seen wearing chin masks.

Whether the game will become another hotbed for coronavirus will become clear later, but epidemiologists are already condemning such irresponsible behavior by basketball fans.

“Since the number of coronavirus cases in the country is growing rapidly, large concentrations of people in a confined space lasting several hours, according to epidemiologists, pose a high risk that the virus will spread even faster.

The National Center for Public Health urges all Lithuanian sports fans to avoid mass gatherings and to support their favorite teams by watching the competition remotely. We understand the spirit of sports competitions, we understand how good it feels to support the teams in the stands, but now is the time, sadly, completely inappropriate. Now is the time for all of us to be civic, responsible and refuse to visit such gatherings.

Individuals are required to wear protective gear that covers their nose and mouth by decision of the Chief of Emergency Operations at the state level. Failure to comply with these rules will result in liability. This requires the identification of individuals, ”explained Justina Petravičienė, a specialist in the Internal Administration Division of the National Center for Public Health.

We want to remind you that on Thursday, when journalists asked A. Veryga how he valued the “Žalgiris” party, in which 5,000 people were to gather, the minister replied that he valued it as bad.

“Again, the question is interesting, everyone is waiting for miraculous insurance. Is it really necessary to ban everything and put a policeman next to everyone so that they do not come to the game?

I understand that fans and clubs are hard to survive. But if you really love your team, you bought tickets, this is how you helped the club survive, you better not go to those matches. I think the team will fully understand that if it does, it will act civically. And if you are coming, stay tuned “, said the head of SAM.

On Monday afternoon, A. Veryga announced that all events and meetings that take place in open and closed spaces are prohibited, except for high-level competitions that are held without spectators.

“This means that all competitions in the stadiums will have to be held without spectators,” the minister explained.

At the same time, A. Veryga added: “In addition, cultural events, where tickets are sold electronically, access control is ensured and a distance of at least 2 meters between spectators is ensured, which means that planting every 2 chairs it will not be enough, approximately every 3 chairs will be needed. These proposals will be presented on Wednesday, if accepted, with effect from Friday. “
