Three outbreaks of coronavirus infection were reported in a social care home last week. According to Giedrė Aleksienė, head of the NVSC’s Communicable Disease Management Division, Acting Director, these are good and long-awaited signs of hope, especially recalling the outbreaks registered in these types of institutions before the vaccination of residents and employees began.

“The sharp decrease in the number of outbreaks in social care homes, which are often inhabited by people more vulnerable to coronavirus infection, is a trend that suggests the expected signs of improvement. This shows once again that the vaccine is a special advance in antiviral science, so those who already have the opportunity to be vaccinated should not give it up, ”says G. Aleksienė.

The highest number of active outbreaks, that is, those in which new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the last 14 days, were recorded in educational and treatment institutions last week, 46 and 42, respectively.

The assessment of outbreaks in individual sectors shows that the high prevalence of infection, according to epidemiologists, was recorded in furniture manufacturing companies and trade. Compared to the previous week, the number of outbreaks in these areas has almost doubled, from 14 (March 15-19) to 26 (March 22-26).

According to medical epidemiologist Daiva Razmuvienė, the same trend has been observed for some time when it comes to business, when most outbreaks are in the trade and furniture manufacturing sectors. “We see that controlling the infection is really difficult for companies with a large number of employees. We often find it difficult to organize the shifts correctly and implement, much less, epidemiologically appropriate decisions regarding the organization of catering. As a result, lately our specialists have been paying a lot of attention going to the fireplaces, consulting on site and at the same time helping to find the best work organization solutions to prevent the spread of the infection ”, says doctor D. Razmuvienė.

Likewise, last week there were seven active outbreaks in sewing companies, 11 in construction companies, 5 in transport and logistics companies, and another 4 in companies in the food industry.

Additionally, epidemiologists continue to monitor trends where the number of familial outbreaks remains stable. An evaluation of data from last week shows that family infections continue to account for about a third of all co-identified COVID-19 cases. This trend has been visible since last fall.

The NVSC notes that an outbreak is a sudden spread of communicable diseases that affects a limited number of people and / or a limited area, that is, two or more interrelated cases of the disease in time and space.
