With the rapid spread of the coronavirus in Lithuania, the government announced new restrictions on Monday: meetings will be restricted in the next few days, sports competitions will have to be held without spectators, and masks will be mandatory in all public places in quarantined municipalities.

The Cabinet of Ministers, meeting remotely, decided that the quarantine will be introduced in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and five other municipalities (Šilalė, Širvintos, Telšiai, Trakai and Vilnius districts) from Wednesday.

People who live here will be required to wear masks in all public places with rare exceptions. It will not be necessary to wear masks outside of residential areas when there are no other persons other than family members within a radius of 20 meters.

The municipalities in the quarantine zone will have a stricter restriction of the flow of people in cultural, leisure, entertainment and sports institutions: they must guarantee an area of at least ten square meters per visitor.

In total, a quarantine regime is being introduced in 21 municipalities in Lithuania.

Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga also announced that he would propose to the government on Wednesday to ban events and meetings. If approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, spectators would no longer be admitted to professional sports matches. These bans would go into effect on Friday.

“It would be established that all events and meetings organized in open and closed spaces would be prohibited, except for high-level sports competitions, which are held without spectators. This means that all arena competitions that have been held so far with spectators will have to be held without spectators, ”A. Veryga told reporters.

According to A. Veryga, the ban on cultural events for the disabled, where tickets are sold electronically, ensures access control and a distance of two meters between spectators.
