It will be possible to seek specialized advice from any institution in the country that has a contract with any territorial health insurance fund (ICD).

This is, for example, a referral for a consultation with a specialist doctor issued to a patient covered by compulsory health insurance and living in Vilnius. The patient learns that at the closest polyclinic these services will have to wait 25 days, but at the Šiauliai medical institution, to which he intends to go in a week, there are no queues at the same specialist, so he enrolls there .

Thus, the patient will receive the required service more quickly, which means that treatment will start earlier if necessary.

In this way, the patient acquires the right to freely choose where to receive the planned health service. Until now, the medical institution was obliged to have a contract with the ICD of the patient’s place of residence.

It is true that the exception is primary health care services, so you must consult a family doctor at the institution where the patient is enrolled.

The new provisions for the provision of services to patients are expected to improve access to services, reduce the administrative burden on institutions, increase legal certainty, and provide more clarity on common practices.
