“Today I met with the leaders of the parties represented in parliament and during these meetings I can affirm that both the parties of the ruling coalition and the future opposition parties, their representatives, have already forgotten about the electoral battalions and are ready to work constructively, “Nausėda told reporters.

The president claimed to have congratulated the Union of the Lithuanian Christian Homeland-Democrat (TS-LKD) for its victory in the elections.

“When this party put forward its candidate for Prime Minister Ingrid Šimonytė, I think it is completely logical to wish Ingrida Šimonyte success as Prime Minister, but until then, of course, all the necessary work must be done to form a coalition and divide the ministerial portfolios, “he said.

According to the country’s president, his criteria for future ministers are experience, political will, and the ability to make the necessary changes in the leadership sector during the term.

“It is no secret that the elements of the welfare state, perhaps the most important of them, are health, education and the general welfare of our country. It has already happened that in the last decade there has been an important brake and, I would even say, at some point, a total brake on our reforms in very important sectors. And furthermore, it is impossible to advance if we continue to land on the ground ”, said the President.

According to G. Nausėda, party representatives also discussed how they imagine the welfare state.

“Whether we speak the same language or speak the same content, just in different terms. I can affirm positively that we all see the future of Lithuania in a similar way, Lithuania must be a green and innovative state that guarantees social peace, and this cannot be achieved without reducing social and regional exclusion, which, unfortunately, is currently very high. ”Acknowledged the president.

However, according to the president, this is “the ambition of the mandate.” The head of state pointed to the growing number of people infected with coronavirus.

Nausėda argued that during a meeting with Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and peasant leader Ramūnas Karbauskis, he emphasized that the responsibility for managing the coronavirus should be maintained until “the last business day and the last minute of work.”

“The work that is necessary to protect people’s lives must be done as quickly and efficiently as possible,” the president said.

After meeting with the president, peasant leader R. Karbauskis told reporters that he hoped the president would help uphold traditional values.

“I think the Seimas will be active in this field (of human rights – aut. Past). I urge you to be active in every way, that is your promise to the electorate, that is the expectation of the electorate. Every party worth its salt must live up to the expectations of the electorate. First of all, I look forward to an in-depth discussion on this question at Seimas himself, and then depending on what is specifically proposed, I will certainly decide for myself. In any case, I hope that my position is expressed during the consideration of these laws ”, assured the President.

When asked whether he would nominate his candidates for the positions of heads of foreign affairs, national defense or other ministries, G. Nausėda said that he intended to actively participate in the formation of the government.

“But not by improvising and taking the ministers out of their pockets, but by listening to the expectations of the party, the negotiations of the party <...> and today we have already talked about some principles. I will not hide, there was talk of another surname, but today it would be the least serious to treat these surnames as carved in stone, “said the President.

The opposition conservatives won the parliamentary elections. Talks about a ruling center-right coalition with the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party began Monday night.

According to preliminary data, the National Christian Democratic Union of Lithuania has won 50 seats and, together with the coalition partners, will have a majority in the Seimas.

The presidents of the three parties issued a joint statement on Monday night that they are determined to form a government led by Ingrida Šimonytė.

According to the Constitution, the Prime Minister is appointed by the President with the approval of the Seimas and the Head of State also approves the composition of the Government.
