The BNS news agency asked G. Nausėda in an interview on Monday if the president supports the government’s efforts to deal with the quarantine, and perhaps there is an alternative and he agrees with those who say that the quarantine has already been exhausted.
“There are solutions that upset society and that in a certain sense provoke the rebellion of the people.”
According to G. Nausėda, there are two aspects of the question: “on the one hand, if the direction itself is correct, on the other hand, if we choose that strategy and implement it by appropriate means”.
“It would be a crime today to say that we just have to relax everything because we just get bored. No way, no. I think that the dynamics of diseases and the dynamics in neighboring countries, and in the European Union as a whole, is so worrying that, unfortunately, we cannot really relax.
Are we making good use of these tools to improve the psychological state of our society? I do not think so. There really are a lot of errors here, inconsistencies. Sometimes I would even say that those decisions upset society, that in a sense they cause people to rebel and do the opposite. I do not want to point fingers at events of a very recent nature, which have caused a great resonance in society, I want to talk about the essence.
In fact, we open cultural and educational institutions too late. Especially cultural institutions. We must do everything possible to open up those things that are extremely important to everyone and their well-being, while being safe and compliant.
Today we take Maslow’s pyramid and say we have to eat and sleep, and there culture can wait somewhere at the top. I think probably only the things that we reveal to ourselves in the world of culture would make it easier for us to endure this really difficult time. At this point, unfortunately, we really have a place to stretch so far. I hope that the right decisions are made, ”says G. Nausėda.
The president asks for solutions
According to the president, the answer today is simple: the quarantine must be strict, but it must not “provoke actions that are a demonstration of a certain disregard for the established requirements.”
“On the contrary, it is necessary to look for creative solutions that show that protection, subject to certain security requirements, can prevent the spread of the disease. On the other hand, an event or event would happen and everyone would be happy about it.
A concrete example: the Kaunas club “Žalgiris” submitted a proposal to the Government on the organization of sports competitions according to certain established requirements. Until today there is no answer. Why not? Lack of time, lack of desire, or have no idea what to do about it? And you should think, ”says G. Nausėda.
The president asks for flexibility, to see very specific cases and the responsibilities of the organizers: how they intend to implement the event, if the event can really be organized. If it turns out later that something was not done to the end, you will have to take responsibility.
“Perhaps in this way we can spread good practices to other areas and thus allow our people to feel more calm, secure and survive those who remain, I think, for a few months that will still be quite difficult and controversial, until then perhaps not entirely , a triumphant ending, but still even a bit of relaxation or opportunity to allow yourself to breathe.
Today, let’s agree, it is really difficult for everyone and some provisions, as I see them, especially at a time when opportunities to be in nature are closed even in neighboring municipalities – to force people to focus on certain places and I see myself. As a nature lover, I see how people just rub each other because they are confined enough in space and many people are spreading to the same places at the same time. In this way, the risk is not reduced but increased.
I do not think that it is possible to take and release the movement between municipalities in such a large volume, but of course, taking into account the situation of specific municipalities, the possibility of moving around the city, which would reduce the concentration of people, could really be organized, ”says G. Nausėda.
Currently, the government is liberalizing the quarantine conditions, allowing the functioning of cultural institutions, but the organization of events is still prohibited.
The MAMA music awards in the public space received a great resonance in the society during the weekend, during the broadcast there was resentment because the quarantine rules were not followed, no masks were used and there were no safe distances.
Organizers said there were no outsiders at the event, all participants were screened for COVID-19 before the awards, and staff wore protective masks.
