This week, the president met with the mayors of Lithuanian cities and discussed the possibilities of mass vaccination in different regions. According to G. Nausėda, the results of the meetings are gratifying.
“I was pleased that all the mayors, both logistically and in terms of infrastructure and human resources, are ready to increase vaccination rates 3-5 times in a few days,” President G. Nausėda said of the preparations for vaccination in Lithuania.
According to the president, the plan to vaccinate all Lithuanians in mid-summer should be implemented, but has so far been hampered by obstacles to the introduction of the vaccine.
On Friday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) must also decide on the suitability of another manufacturer, AstraZeneca, for the vaccine. According to G. Nausėda, if approved, another 150,000 would arrive in Lithuania as early as February. dose of vaccine. With vaccines from other manufacturers, Lithuania could receive a total of around 200,000 in February. dose.
“This would mean that already in the second half of February we should be ready to vaccinate about 10,000. people a day, ”G. Nausėda told reporters.
In the second quarter of the year it is expected that it will be possible to vaccinate up to 35 thousand. population per day. According to G. Nausėda, it is safe to say that we will have more and more vaccinations every month.
The president also criticized the vaccination plan announced by the Ministry of Health (SAM), according to which the mass vaccination of the population would only begin in July. In his opinion, the plan is based on “yesterday’s data.”
“If such a plan were to be implemented, we would probably be the first country to decide to follow a different plan to acquire herd immunity. The whole European Union intends to do so by the summer, Lithuania intends to do it in the longer term.
If we get enough vaccines, we will have to apologize to people for vaccinating less than we had the vaccine. If we don’t have enough vaccines, it will clearly be an objective obstacle, ”explained G. Nausėda.
Šimašius: Vaccination teams could also come to schools and businesses.
On Thursday, after a meeting with Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte, R. Šimašius declared that the capital is ready for mass vaccination of the population, only vaccines are missing.
“The only limitation that prevents more vaccinations is the lack of vaccines. {…} We are ready to increase the volume of vaccination several times. So far, four polyclinics are ready, the vaccines are going well for them, ”R. Šimašius told reporters.
According to him, 5 thousand people could be vaccinated in Vilnius. people per day, if necessary, the volume could be increased to tens of thousands.
After meeting with President Gitanas Nausėda, Vilnius Mayor R. Šimašius confirmed this to journalists once again.
“If we were talking about even higher numbers, we would need even more vaccines, our strategy would be more on the ground.” We apply the same to testing.
We don’t go to stadiums, hallways, municipal buildings, and we usually go to people. As happened with the social workers during the tests, the team itself, which vaccinates, would come to the school or to the social care institution, the company ”, R. Šimašius spoke about possible vaccination scenarios.
He says he appreciates the decision of the Ministry of Health (SAM) to distribute vaccines equally in all cities of the country, but the reservations could apply to certain groups of the population.
“Groups that are more sensitive, naturally there are more in Vilnius, the national importance of medical institutions is greater. We are ready to vaccinate as much as is available, ”the mayor of Vilnius told reporters on Friday.
According to R. Šimašius, if a sufficient amount of vaccines is received in early summer, it is really possible to achieve at least the herd immunity of the city, with more doses it would be possible to do it even earlier.
