Nausėda granted Lithuanian citizenship to British actor Dexter Fletcher

As reported by the Presidency, the Head of State on May 12. met with F. Fletcher remotely and discussed his important social and cultural activities for the Lithuanian state and relations with Lithuania.

“D.” Fletcher is one of the most prominent artists, who, although born outside of Lithuania, closely connects his personal destiny and creative plans with our country, strengthens his authority in the world, “said the president.

The President believes that the works of D. Fletcher will enrich Lithuania and allow international audiences to learn more about the rich culture of our country.

During more than 4 decades of acting, Fletcher has starred in many acclaimed UK and US movies and series, including the 1998 world-renowned Guy Ritchie in the film “Lok, stok or shout.” 2011 was nominated for BAFTA Awards for his directorial debut on Crazy Bill. In recent years, Fletcher has produced four Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody films and directed the Oscar for Music and the two-Golden Globe-winning film Rocketman.

Since 1997, when D. Fletcher married Lithuanian theater and opera director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė, he has spent a lot of time between London and Vilnius, communicating closely with the most famous artistic and cultural figures in Lithuania and studying the Lithuanian language.

2009 D. Fletcher established a cooperation with the Vilnius International Film Festival “Kino pavasaris”. He has been a member of the jury several times, launched the competition program “New Europe – New Names”. Since 2011 Lithuanian film fans have exceptional opportunities to be among the first in the world to become acquainted with the latest works by D. Fletcher.

Recognizing the merits of D. Fletcher for Lithuanian cinema, the Union of Lithuanian Cinematographers in 2019 was declared the first honorary member.

D. Fletcher maintains close ties with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and has sung at concerts in Vilnius. He contributed to Lithuania’s creative work by bringing in top professionals: directors Francesca Zambello and Anthony Minghell, set designers Dick Bird and Jonas Morrell, and light artist Peter Mumford.

Thanks to D. Fletcher, charity evenings were also organized in London and Vilnius to help Lithuanian large families and the Department of Pediatric Oncohematology at Santara Clinics. In addition, he continues personally with his charitable activities in Lithuania.

Exceptionally, granting D. Fletcher citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania by special merits to the State of Lithuania, activity in which a person makes a significant contribution to strengthening the statehood of Lithuania, increasing the power and authority of Lithuania in the international community. The Academy of Music and Theater and the Lithuanian Union of Cinematographers, according to a report by the President’s Communication Group.
