G. Nausėda reacted to statements by the country’s outgoing head Dalia Grybauskaitė that after the elections, decisions on the management of the coronavirus will be taken too late.
“I would like those things not to depend on elections, but to have a coherent, science-based strategy for what we do. (…) I hope that the new ruling majority, whatever it may be, will certainly realize how serious it is. of the situation. Because the situation is not serious, the situation is very serious. The situation is so serious that we must forget about everything else and solve this problem, “the President emphasized.
The president said he thought the time between the quarantine and the second coronavirus wave had not been used correctly.
“It just came to our attention then. There was a bit of wavering humor when we rightly believed that we had overcome the first wave very well. (…) But these calming moods became our own, I can’t say that Lithuania is the only one. ( …) Now we are at a point where we still have the option of being able to solve the problem without shutting down the entire economy and all public life. “If we only release current statistics, then we have no other option, we stop everything”, said the president.
Some of the country’s doctors on Monday asked the authorities for tougher restrictions because they feel the influence of the elections. The head of state said that the opinion of specialists was sometimes not heard.
“It is very important that we find a consensus above all at the specialist level and that this opinion is respected by those who should listen to it. Unfortunately, I cannot say that it has always been a reality. Sometimes we have the impression that the recommendations of specialists circulate through a single channel and government decisions are directed to the daily routine. I would like the help of specialists to be valued and respected, ”G. Nausėda told reporters on Tuesday.
Named the problems of epidemiologists.
After visiting NVSC, G. Nausėda assured that there really are a lot of problems there.
“The visit to the NVSC was aimed at becoming familiar with the problems that afflict our specialists. But first I want to thank you for that work of society, often invisible, perhaps unappreciated. And save the lives of our people today. Many people depend on them ”, emphasized the president.
He said there were really a lot of problems.
“There are many problems, these problems are mainly related to the fact that we are still not in a position to adequately finance those people in the front line, there is a lack of work, wages, good professionals are lost because they cannot compete in the market, people she is tired of huge burdens. “, – the president named the problems.
He said the problem should not be solved by “praying in tongues”, but by planning next year’s budget.
“Some things can be done this year, but looking ahead, there is certainly not an extra million euros that will be used to pay off existing debts, which will not have any significant impact. We estimate that an additional 4 million euros would be needed and we need to reach a political agreement on these issues, “he said.
Mr. Nausėda also said that it was necessary to consolidate scientific forces. And coronavir is well managed by those countries that depend on the opinion of professionals, not politicians.
“Maybe we need to assemble a larger team of scientists who will not only provide recommendations to the authorities, but also to the public on how to act in this situation,” G. Nausėda told the proposal.
Difficulties
After meeting with the head of the country, Rolanda Lingienė, head of the Vilnius department of the NVSC, said that she was very pleased that the head of the country finally paid attention to the work of epidemiologists.
“This has never happened before,” R. Lingienė said after the meeting.
A representative from the NVSC said that epidemiologists are currently trying to stop the spread of the virus.
“Our goal is human health safety first. What are we doing? We do everything we can to stop the spread of the virus so that we can receive the vaccine. Until then, we must protect sensitive groups in society, doctors and employees who work in social care institutions ”, said the expert.
“At this difficult time, united leadership is very important to us,” said R. Lingienė. He also said that epidemiologists’ salaries right now are simply deplorable.
