The president announced that he would approve the composition of I. Šimonytė’s government and that he would sign the decree today.

“This cabinet will begin its work during a really difficult period for Lithuania. The first and most urgent task will be to overcome the pandemic crisis that we are currently going through. Make very decisive and fast decisions that give results,” said the President.

“I really had to know in detail the candidates for ministers, this process ended almost at the same time as the preparation of the government program,” said the president.

G. Nausėda stated that he devoted all this time to meetings with the candidates.

“I am glad that in constructive communication with the representatives of the ruling majority we managed to coordinate all the candidacies for all the ministerial positions,” said the head of state.

He also evaluated the program of the new government, already registered on Monday.

“It is really ambitious, it responds to the goals that I propose as goals of the welfare state. (…) I can say with certainty that in many cases the provisions, principles, plans and strategies overlap. Therefore, I am still looking forward to close cooperation, we are looking in one direction, I think we can do a lot for the benefit of Lithuania, ”said G. Nausėda.

You have to start working as soon as possible

Prime Minister-designate I. Šimonytė told a press conference on Monday that she hopes the government will begin work in the near future.

“We hope that the government will receive a mandate to act soon. Of course, we will also present our program to committees and political groups, as needed. But time is the deciding factor in this case. And considering that we have both coronaviruses and we have to approving the budget for next year, there will be very little time for the government to get off to a smooth start, ”said I. Šimonytė.

The prime minister-designate said she believed the goals set out in the government’s program were achievable.

“I believe this is the program that my fellow ministers and I could implement and achieve the stated results,” expected I. Šimonytė.

The search for new candidates for minister did not wait

Delphi Remember that on Friday the head of state announced that the prime minister would have to seek two new candidates for ministerial posts. Kasparas Adomaitis, candidate of the Freedom Party for the post of Minister of Transport and Communications, and Dalia Miniataitė, the candidate for Minister of Agriculture nominated by the National Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), were rejected.

Still, the search for new candidates was swift. Last Sunday, the country’s president met with Marius Skuodis, a new candidate for Transport Minister proposed by the Freedom Party, who was positively valued.

On Monday, the country’s chief met with a new candidate for agriculture ministers: Kęstutis Navickas. In the government of Acting Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, he served as Minister of the Environment for some time.

I. The Government of Šimonytė will be authorized to act when the Seimas approves its program. His presentation to the Seimas is scheduled for Tuesday.

Approval of the program can take place this week or next, depending on how much time Seimas members dedicate to considering the program.
