The President emphasized that R. Sinkevičius had enough experience and political influence to be able to achieve important results in the difficult pre-electoral period.
R. Sinkevičius, 68, is currently the Vice Chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Labor Party (LSDDP) and the largest of the faction in the Seimas. He has been in Parliament for a fourth term and since 2017. In December, he chaired the Seimas Economic Committee. 2012-2016 R. Sinkevičius was Minister of Transport and Communications.
ELTA recalls that on Monday Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis submitted President R. Sinkevičius’ candidacy for Minister of Economy and Innovation.
The most important tasks for the candidate are reported to be to reduce the consequences of the pandemic and stabilize the situation, accelerate the implementation of the INVEGA measures and ensure the implementation of the planned measures within the established deadlines.
The Ministry of Economy and Innovation has not had a permanent head since Virginijus Sinkevičius, the former head of this ministry, was appointed European Commissioner.
Previously, the President had said that the current Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas could hold these positions, but he did not agree to change the nature of the work.
