According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, this would allow for a more flexible response to the new needs of Lithuanian air transport, regardless of the ever-changing strategy of foreign airlines.

According to the Minister of Transport and Communications, Jaroslav Narkevich, this is especially relevant for the recovery of the air transport market after the COVID-19 pandemic, since its consequences for air transport are especially painful. There is a possibility that in the recovery from this crisis, air transport will not return to the business model it was in until now.

The national airline, a virtual airline, is expected to be established before the end of this year or the beginning of next. Its establishment would be financed from the state budget.

A virtual airline is a company that buys flight hours and, according to its decisions, can also buy other services related to the activities of the airline, such as the distribution of tickets, to another airline, but provides services under its own brand in the market. . For example, the Estonian airline Nordica operates on this principle.

Such an airline model is offered in terms of its advantages: significantly lower startup costs (in fact, full aircraft purchase, crew, maintenance and insurance), much more flexibility to change volumes and aircraft, and more operational startup .
