The water is refreshing, but let’s be careful
Prolonged exposure to the sun, hard work, or sports on a hot day, as well as prolonged exposure to a hot environment (indoors, in a car), can lead to a risk of overheating. All children experience a sharp rise in air temperature, but it is especially difficult for young children whose thermoregulation is not sufficiently developed, as well as others whose thermoregulation is affected due to illness or other reasons, according to the statement. of press.
“In case of extremely high air temperature, it is advisable not to work outdoors, it is better to do it early in the morning or postpone it for a later afternoon, to limit sports or other physical activities outdoors. On a hot day, children cannot be left alone in the car, even for a short time, ”advises I. Taraškevičienė, Head of the NVSC Department of Public Health Safety.
The specialist also warns that on hot days, we must be extremely careful when spending time in the bodies of water.
“Swimming in the lake certainly helps to cool off. But let’s be vigilant and careful, protect our children. According to the World Health Organization, there are more drowning and injuries related to being near water during the heat throughout the world. So I want to draw attention to this and encourage everyone to be careful, “advises I. Taraškevičienė.
The biggest danger is heat stroke.
When too much heat disrupts the body’s temperature regulation system, a person doesn’t sweat enough, their body temperature becomes dangerously high, and the heat hits a person.
One of the symptoms of heat stroke is dry, hot, or blotchy skin (due to sweating). When touched, the human body is visibly hot, the person has difficulty navigating the environment, can wander and lose consciousness completely or partially.
Public health specialist I. Taraškevičienė cautions that if you notice the characteristic symptoms of heat stroke, you need to immediately call an ambulance. Until the doctors arrive, the victim should be moved to the shade, sprayed with warm water, or wrapped in warm wet tissue. If the person is conscious, it is important to restore lost body fluids as soon as possible (give cold water or tea to drink).
The most important thing is prevention.
On hot summer days, drink more fluids, eat more fruits and vegetables. Try to cool your body in a warm shower or bath, spend more time in cooler rooms. Limit physical activity during the heat. Do not leave children or animals in closed cars. When you go out, put on a helmet, choose loose, natural clothing, open body areas, apply sunscreen to your lips, and wear sunglasses.
