The deployment of a German military contingent deployed by Germany on the territory of the new NATO member states would be a violation of the Russia-Alliance cooperation agreement, Moscow envoy to Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Thursday.
The Pentagon announced the decision to deploy 12,000 troops to Germany last night.
If these 12,000 troops were to be deployed on the territory of one of the new NATO member states, it would be a violation of the basic agreement on relations between Russia and NATO, M. Ulyanov said on the Twitter social network on Thursday.
Under the 1997 NATO and Russia Framework Agreement, NATO agreed not to deploy the necessary forces permanently in Eastern Europe and the Baltic States. Observers pay that the document does not indicate in which case the term is required.
V remembers that, according to the Pentagon plan, 6,400 soldiers will return and 5,600 will be relocated to other European countries, probably Poland and Romania, like my experts. Part of the war could also be transferred to the Baltic States. United States Secretary of Defense Mark Esper confirmed that the process will begin in the coming weeks and will cost the United States several billion dollars.
However, the process will take much longer, probably several years, and the logistics of military redistribution are very complex. Furthermore, Trump, who initiated the troop transfer in the United States presidential election in November, cannot be reelected, and the United States’ position on the matter may change.
So far, the US Secretary of Defense has not provided a more specific plan on how many additional US wars could occur in our region.
In June, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced his decision to reduce the US military contingent in Germany, accusing him of financially benefiting from a US military presence. According to Trump, if Berlin increases its defense budget, Washington will defend all of its troops in Germany. Between Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Trump’s mandate is becoming increasingly popular, with several accusations being made on the German side of the United States. Germany spent 1.3% of GDP on full defense last year. Germany claims to reach the 2% target by 2024.
Esper also criticized Germany during a press conference on Wednesday, saying that Germany was the richest country in Europe. You can and should dedicate more to your defense. Still, the United States Secretary of Defense, while still criticizing Germany, did not associate the withdrawal of the war with Germany’s excessive defense spending and said the change was a strategic decision to deter Russian and Chinese aggression in Europe.
