“We will consider the issue of the students’ winter holidays this week. This does not have to be a unilateral decision of the Ministry, since it directly affects the education of the students, the work of the parents, the school curricula”, Kęstutis Butvydas, Advisor to the Minister of Education, Science and Sports, said on Tuesday.

“Therefore, we will listen to the opinions of school representatives, members of the parent community, epidemiologists. Taking them into account, we will prepare the proposals and decisions of the Ministry, which we will present to the current or new government,” he said.

Health Minister Aurelius Veryga, who ends his term on Monday, said the first winter break could be used to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

According to K. Butvydas, the situation in educational institutions is monitored every day, but there are still no plans to introduce universal distance education.

“We find that when schools operate remotely, the number of illnesses in your community does not decrease rapidly. This shows that cases of infection do not arise only in educational institutions ”, commented K. Butvydas.

“Last week we interviewed the country’s schools. More than 70 percent. Indicated that they support a mixed approach to education. (…) We trust the schools, we really see examples of success. Also, even now, when they Preschool, preschool and primary education institutions are suffering from diseases, with the message of the National Center for Public Health, distance education can be advertised there ”, he added.

K. Butvydas stated that decisions about the education of students are made on the basis of the practice of foreign countries.

“The parties recognize the importance of ensuring the safety of children, teachers, and other school personnel, but also the need to provide adequate care and education for minors, and assess the ability of parents to combine care of children and work. Of course, if the situation worsens in such a way that other decisions have to be made, the ministry is willing to do it, “commented the minister’s advisor.

At that time, the education unions expressed different positions on distance education.

The Lithuanian Education and Science Union proposes to keep the current procedure, when after assessing the situation and consulting with the founders, the educational institutions themselves make the decisions about the teaching method.

On Monday, the Lithuanian Union of Education Workers called on the appointed Prime Minister Ingrid Šimonytė to “re-assess the situation regarding the future work of educational institutions and consider the possibility of teleworking only”.

With the second introduction of quarantine in the country on November 7, education, with the exception of preschool and primary education, is carried out remotely or mixed. Currently, the quarantine runs until December 17 inclusive.

According to the National Center for Public Health, there are currently more than 1.5 thousand people with coronavirus. employees of educational institutions and more than 2 thousand. children.
