According to her, Latvian Minister I. Šuplinska responded positively to this opportunity and thanked Lithuania for the proposal received.
The council of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) decided on Monday to move the 2021 World Cup to Belarus.
The tournament was supposed to be co-organized by Minsk and Riga, but the Latvian government has said it does not want to compete with Belarus for political reasons: Aliaksandr Lukashenko’s regime has been cracking down on peaceful protests since August.
The hockey championship is scheduled from May 21 to June 6. Sixteen of the best teams are fighting in the World Cup. The teams are divided into two groups: Group B in Riga will play Latvia, Canada, Finland, the United States, Germany, Norway, Italy and Kazakhstan, Group A will play Belarus, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark and Great Britain.
