According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the meeting with the Secretary of State of the United States, Minister G. Landsbergis will discuss current issues of cooperation between Lithuania and the United States and opportunities to strengthen economic ties.
It also challenges international security policy, the importance of a strong transatlantic link, the United States’ contribution to regional security, support for democratic processes in the region and the world, and relations with China.
The visit will also include meetings with Robert Menéndez, chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, other senators, White House officials, and the Atlantic Council Analytical Center community.
The Minister will participate in the events of the analytical centers – the German Marshall Fund and the European Policy Analysis Center – and will meet with US companies investing in Lithuania, as well as with representatives of the local Lithuanian community.
The Secretary of State of the United States, A. Blinken, and the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Senate of the United States, R. Menéndez, have recently expressed their support for Lithuania in the conflict with China.
Relations between Vilnius and Beijing began to deteriorate as Lithuania began forging closer ties with Taiwan, which China views as its rogue province.
As a result, Beijing called its ambassador for consultations in August and ordered Lithuania to do the same.
China has also recently taken steps to stop freight trains to Lithuania, issue food export permits, lower credit limits for Lithuanian companies and raise prices.
