“There will be a smooth transition to the second Trump administration,” the head of US diplomacy told a news conference.
“The world must have full confidence that the transition necessary to ensure the functioning of the State Department today … with the president taking office on January 20, one minute after noon, will be a success,” added Pompeo, referring to as of the date the president is inaugurated
Pompeo has also announced a visit to seven US allies, although they have already congratulated Biden on his election as president.
The secretary of state said he would fly to Paris on Friday, then to Istanbul and Sacartwell, and finally visit Jerusalem and the three Arab Gulf states: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
During the trip, Trump’s “historic efforts to build peace and cooperation in the Middle East,” Pompeo told reporters, will be discussed.
The journey seems awkward enough, knowing that Trump stubbornly refuses to admit defeat in the election and that his administration has yet to take any steps to prepare to hand over power to Biden.
World leaders, including the vast majority of America’s allies, have already congratulated Biden on his election as president.
However, Trump refuses to acknowledge his victory and claims that the election was rigged. The president has initiated a vote count and judicial investigations into alleged violations in some states.
When asked if the United States still has the moral right to issue statements calling for free elections in other countries, Pompeo said the issue was “absurd.”
“This department is diligent in ensuring that elections around the world are safe, free and fair, and my officials are risking their lives to ensure that they are,” he said.
