MEPs propose to guarantee the right to disconnect from the internet after work

The resolution adopted by the committee (31 in favor, 6 against, 18 abstentions) establishes that the right of the worker to disconnect from the Internet, from work tasks and from electronic communication during unemployment must be enshrined in EU law , as well as in collective agreements between workers and employers.

MEPs note that the employers’ requirement that an employee be “always available” can have a negative impact on their physical and mental health, work-life balance and well-being. The European Commission is asked to legislate accordingly. The entire Parliament intends to vote on this resolution in January, according to a report by the Bureau of the European Parliament in Lithuania.

According to Eurofound, more than two-thirds of EU workers have been working from home since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The intensive use of digital devices and communication technologies allows you to work anytime, anywhere. However, it also has detrimental consequences, as it encourages increased working hours and blurs the lines between work and private life.
