Medvedev won with a score of 4: 6, 7: 6 (2), 6: 4.
2 hours and 42 minutes: the longest final in the history of the finals.
This trophy is by far the most important title in a 24-year Russian career. So far, the tennis player has had three ATP Masters Series victories on his account and also reached the only Grand Prix final at last year’s US Open.
The champion of the tournament on the way to the title defeated the first, second and third rocket on the planet and became the first to do so during the Nitto ATP Finals tournament.
Overall, only four tennis players in the entire history of the game have been able to beat the three strongest players in the world and win the title in ATP tournaments of any rank.
As in Saturday’s semifinal against Rafael Nadal (ATP-2), Medvedev had to eliminate the sets deficit here.
In the fifth game of the first game geime the Russian allowed himself to lose the innings with a 40: 0 lead. Such small pits were enough for Thiem to explode.
In the second set, the advantage of no tennis player came to light, so the game went into extra time. In it, D. Thiem went ahead 2: 0, but then the dominance of the Russian representative began: he won up to seven balls without an answer and snatched the deciding set.
And again, the tireless Russian had more resources. From the ninth time, Medvedev, who finally broke the opponent’s innings, won the set 6: 4 and became the champion of the tournament in London.
Thus, defeat at the O2 stadium and an inexperienced Russian will add up to 1,500 points to his ATP ranking.
Interestingly, when he arrived at the Paris Masters tournament a few weeks ago, he hasn’t scored a single win against the top 10 ATP players this year. In just a few weeks, Medvedev has achieved a series of 10 victories, seven of which are against the top 10 players.
Six different tennis players have won the Nitto ATP Finals in the last six years, but there is no US Open champion, Thiem, who loses for the second year in a row in the final.
Starting next year, the ATP finals will take place in Turin, Italy.
The strongest pair in the doubles tournament were Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektičius: they broke Jurgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6: 2, 3: 6, 10: 5.
