According to preliminary data, 185 migrants who illegally crossed the border between Belarus and Lithuania were detained last day, the Statistics Department announced on Tuesday.

A total of 4,026 foreigners entered Lithuania illegally this year.

Lithuania has declared an emergency situation due to the increase in illegal immigration. The country’s officials take the position that the increase in migratory flows is an organized action of the Minsk regime against Lithuania.

The use of force against migrants at the border will depend on their behavior: vice minister

Border guards can use all necessary measures to stop illegal migration, says Deputy Interior Minister Arnoldas Abramavičius.

According to him, the use of force can be determined by certain circumstances, aggressive behavior of the migrants.

“It just came to our attention then. In a month, we only came to your request, accepting the fact that Lithuania can no longer accept the ever-increasing flow of migrants and keeping in mind that crossing the state border is an illegal act.” said the deputy minister on lrt radio on Tuesday.

He said that foreigners must first be explained in good faith that they must return to Belarus.

“First of all, migrants are probably told that they got lost, that they came to the great country of Belarus and admired its nature, they got lost in the area and can continue the tourist route in the Republic of Belarus,” said the deputy minister. .

“The use of force probably depends on certain circumstances, on how aggressive those citizens are,” Abramavičius said.

According to him, no foreigners have been granted asylum in Lithuania so far.

On the other hand, the vice minister stressed that most of the requests have not yet been processed.

On Monday, Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė signed an order allowing border guards to turn away illegal immigrants going to Lithuania and direct them to border checkpoints or diplomatic missions.

“People who intentionally try to cross the state border in prohibited places should be considered as people who intend to commit a criminal activity: the illegal crossing of the state border,” he said.

Presenting the decision, A. Bilotaitė stated that international law allows the reversal of migrants, if that solution is temporary and if migrants are offered an alternative opportunity to apply for asylum.

This year, a record number of illegal immigrants, some 4,000, entered Lithuania through the border with Belarus.

Lithuanian officials call the increased migration flows a hybrid aggression by the Belarusian regime. As a result, a state of emergency has been declared in the country.
