The Maltese ambassador to Finland resigned after posting a comment on Facebook comparing German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Adolf Hitler, claiming that his goal was “to control Europe”.

Malta’s foreign ministry said on Monday that Michael Zammit Tabona’s comment “does not reflect friendship and mutual respect between Malta and Germany.”
Mr. Zammit Tabona worked for six years as Malta’s non-resident ambassador to Finland. The ministry announced that it had immediately accepted his resignation.
In his Facebook comment, which was later removed, M. Zammit Tabona wrote: “75 years ago we arrested Hitler. Who will stop Angel Merkel? It fulfills Hitler’s dream of controlling Europe. “
On Friday, Europe celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the victory of the Allied forces against Nazi Germany.
