“They are criminals who have confessed, have been caught at the crime scene and will be tried by the Attorney General, the Venezuelan Civil Court, and the process will be fair and appropriate,” said Maduro.
The socialist leader said that the Americans, formerly known as Luke Denman and Airan Berry, were “treated well and with respect.”
Venezuela said on Monday it had arrested Americans for a failed “invasion” attributed by the government to opposition leader Juan Guaid.
Maduro showed the 34-year-old Denman and Berry 41-year-old passports on state television and said the detainees were members of the United States security forces.
United States President Donald Trump said his country is not involved in the incident and Washington accused Maduro of launching a “disinformation campaign.”
However, earlier Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington “would use all available means to try to recover” the detainees.
