Lukiškės Square drama doesn’t end: he wants to have a monument with Vytis there, he doesn’t necessarily have to sit on a horse

“The Department of Cultural Heritage has provided us (this week) with proposals for specific amendments. Because we asked if there were gaps in the legal basis so that … it would be possible to maintain more order,” said Arūnas Gumuliauskas, president of the Seimas Commission. of Struggles for Freedom and the Historical Memory of the State.

According to the MP, in this case we are no longer talking about Lukiškės Square.

“These are common spaces, monuments of historical importance. There are certain gaps in which there may be an ambiguous acceptance of this. They want to make those things more concrete. (…) For example, it would not have occurred to anyone in the Ninth Fort open a restaurant or a night bar, “said A. Gumuliauskas.

Representatives of patriotic organizations are preparing a speech to the president.

Meanwhile, the Public Council commission under the Struggles for Freedom and the Historical Memory of the State still discussed the issue of Lukiškšs Square on Wednesday. The commission decided to ask President Gitanas Nausėda not to veto the law approved by the Seimas.

“We, all freedom fighters, all organizations, of which there are at least fifteen, have been fighting for twenty years to make Lukiškės Square a representative square in Lithuania. We, deportees, political prisoners, supporters, would very much like to have a monument with the symbol of Vytis. You don’t necessarily have to ride a horse, “said commission chairman Gvidas Rutkauskas.

He recalled that there are still at least 40-50 thousand people who have fought for freedom and have suffered for Lithuania. These include deportees, political prisoners, partisans, those born in exile.

“It just caught our eye then. This question is, how could the idea of a Vytis monument have been lost? Someone voted, decided in the Ministry of Culture, but our opinion was practically not evaluated. Because we are elderly, we are not computerized, and we could not participate in such a mass survey, “said G. Rutkauskas.

The head of the commission said they were surprised by the idea of installing a beach on Lukiškės Square.

“What would it be like if you did some kind of concert, dance or entertainment competition in the cemetery? This is not the place at all. A Seimas member correctly said that bad publicity is also publicity. People should appreciate it. What is painful is that we are unable to rectify this situation. If it will be until the fall, in my opinion, it is wrong.

I am from the Kaunas district, our mood is the same as in Vilnius. We do not agree with this. I represent the Lithuanian Union of Political Prisoners and Deported. We have 18 thousand. members. We all disagree with this, “said G. Rutkauskas.

The president has yet to give an opinion on the law.

As already announced, even the president of the Lithuanian Green Peasants Union, Ramūnas Karbauskis, admits that the decision on Lukiškės Square, which also indicates that Vytis should settle there, has caused legal porridge. However, in his opinion, this is not the end of the world.

Aušrinė Armonaitė, the president of the Freedom Party, addressed the President with a request to veto the law in Lukiškės Square.

With the approval of the law stipulating that Lukiškės Square must be managed with seriousness and respect by fighters and insurgents, and its use must not be contrary to public order and good morals, the last-minute amendment by the group’s parliamentarians approved the Chase with a memorial in memory of the victims of freedom in Lithuania.

However, there is still a pending lawsuit against the Lukiškės Square monument. At the Vilnius Regional Court, supporters of the Vytis sculpture seek annulment of the decision in the competition for first-place winner Andrius Labašauskas Hill, which commemorates the struggles for freedom.

Before the adoption of the law, green farmers also publicly criticized the proposal to legalize the installation of the Vytis sculpture by law, awaiting trial. However, in the end, the ruling and almost half of the representatives of the opposition conservatives and the group of members of the Mixed Seimas approved a law that provides for this.

“It just came to our attention then. The amendment to the law was passed by the majority of Seimas members who voted in the Seimas, and it is as it is. I think there is a conflict with the litigation, but it certainly is not the end of the We have made a decision if the court does not treat our decision as a mandatory provision, in which case a court decision will be made, and then we will coordinate the court decision with the provision written in the law, “said R. Karbauskis.

He also reiterated that “the state will use its institutions to determine on what basis the beach (in Lukiškės Square) could be abolished.”

The law has not yet been decided by President Gitan Nauseda. R. Karbauskis does not believe that, in the event of a veto, an extraordinary session of Seimas will be called due to this law.

“I feel like I won’t lead,” said R. Karbauskis.
