Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the third subway line in Minsk on Friday, he recalled that the first nuclear power plant in Belarus started generating electricity this week.
“We will have a lot of electricity. Our protesters cry because there is nowhere to put them. Listen, how is this where to put the electricity? We need to build another power plant of this type to avoid dependence on hydrocarbons,” Lukashenko emphasized.
In his words, a nuclear power plant is a “happiness, a gift”.
“It is necessary to give up internal combustion engines in Minsk. In Minsk, it is necessary to calmly and gradually introduce electric transport, because people are being poisoned,” Lukashenko emphasized.
The first reactor of the first nuclear power plant under construction in Belarus near the Lithuanian state was connected to the country’s power system on November 3 and began generating electricity. It should be fully operational in the first quarter of 2021.
The official commissioning ceremony of the power plant is scheduled for November 7, when the country will celebrate the anniversary of the October Revolution with the participation of A. Lukashenko.
The Astrava nuclear power plant will have two reactors from the Russian VVER project, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts. The second reactor is expected to come online approximately one year after the start of the first reactor.
The power plant is being built by Russia’s state-owned Rosatom and is being financed by a Russian state loan.
