Loss in the world of sports: the five-time Lithuanian champion died

In Daumantai (Kėdainiai District) in 1945. January 18 A. Berankis, born in 1961, began attending cycling training in 1961 with coach Jonas Klungevičius.

A. Berankis became the Lithuanian champion five times: 100 km of team races (1965 and 1967), multi-day races (1969), 146 km of group races (1971) and cross country races (1972), they won the multi-day race “Around Lithuania” (1969), the multi-day Baltic race (1972), won bronze medals at the USSR Championship and the 100 km USSR Spartakiad team race (1967), twice he became Champion of the Cross of the USSR (1969 and 1972 teams) and vice-champion (personal and team classification of 1970 and 1971) and bronze medalist (1972 personal classification).

After graduating as a cyclist, A. Berankis worked as a teacher of physical education at Alytus, in 1983-1986 he was the director of the Alytus sports school “Žalgiris”, in 1986-1991 he was chairman of the committee of physical culture and sport of the city of Alytus. His last job as a physical education teacher was Alytus Panemunė Secondary School. A group of amateur cyclists also gathered there.

A. Berankis was an active public sports figure. At his initiative, in 2008, he started a bicycle trip on the bicycle paths of the city of Alytus to commemorate the Day of the City of Alytus.

The Lithuanian Cycling Federation sincerely sympathizes with the family and relatives of the deceased.
