The first Wizz Air flight from Vilnius to London is scheduled for June 22, and Ryanair will launch on July 1, but the government has not granted permission to fly to one of the countries most affected by COVID-19.

Without permission, but sell

Luke, who lives in England, calls this situation chaos. “I plan to fly from London to Vilnius on June 23. I bought the ticket from Wizz Air. When I began to explain the details, I learned that the government had not yet approved flights from London to Vilnius.” Wizz Air, knowing that it does not have permits for these flights, it continues to sell tickets at high prices, “said the Lithuanian.

Flight permits are currently issued by the Government in separate resolutions. At the end of the quarantine, various permits were issued for scheduled flights to various European countries, but not including Great Britain, Sweden and Portugal.

“They did not inform me that there is a high probability that the flight is not confirmed and that it cannot fly. For example, this week’s flights have already been canceled. I think this is a customer hoax, “Lukas is convinced.

No one could explain

It is true that both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vilnius International Airport announce the permits and restrictions granted on their websites. The Ministry of Transport also informs that before buying a flight ticket, it is worth asking if you have been granted a permit.

However, Luke says state authorities cannot tell Lithuania whether such a permit will be granted before the flight. “I called several places and nobody could tell me when and how this flight would be confirmed or not. It gives the impression that there is no coordination between regulators and airlines, “said a compatriot trapped in London.

He noted that there are at least 200,000 Lithuanians living in Britain, for whom it is important to know whether there will be flights or whether it is planned to wait for the pandemic to subside.

The government has not yet approved the flights.

How 15 minutes According to Virginija Žegunytė, Head of the Civil Aviation Division of the Lithuanian Transport Security Administration, the incidence of COVID-19 in Britain is too high, therefore foreigners are prohibited from entering. The country is included in the list of countries from which foreigners are prohibited from entering

By the way, Lithuanian citizens have a recommendation for quarantine.

“Based on this list, the Government has not yet approved the resumption of flights between Lithuania and the United Kingdom,” said V. Žegunytė.

It also notes that carriers sell airline tickets in advance, waiting for states to decide to open the borders. “While this is happening in many parts of Europe, the airline must clearly and responsibly state that the specific flight is awaiting approval from the relevant government. Such information would assist the passenger in making an informed decision about a particular flight,” he said.

Wizz Air has yet to comment on the situation.

It would not be the first time

Aviation specialist Simonas Bartkus notes that this would not be the first time that tickets have been sold for flights for which a permit is not yet available.

Kidy Tour, which sold Vilnius tickets to Oslo a month ago, was not allowed to fly at the last minute, so the planes did not take off and people and the airline did not hide their anger.

True, he notes that now more clarity. “Now the procedure is clear and logical: individual permits are no longer issued and Veryga distributes a statistics table every week, and if he meets the morbidity statistics, he is allowed to fly,” he said.
