The commemoration of the Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania began at St. Mass for the freedom of Lithuania, after which a 30-meter tricolor was solemnly brought to the church; the flag was consecrated by the priest Jaunius Kelpšas. The meeting was hosted by the Consul General of the Republic of Lithuania in Chicago Mantvydas Bekešius, the President of the Council of Culture of the Lithuanian Community Giedrė Knieža, the President of the Council of the Antanas Rašymas Youth Center and the President of the Marquette Park District of the Lithuanian community Auksuolė Marciulevičienė.

The event’s musical program was led by Simona Smirnova, Lithuanian jazz singer, songwriter and Kanklin from New York. A graduate of the LMTA and the prestigious Berklee College of Music in New York, S. Smirnova released her second album “Joan of Arc, for String Quartet” a month ago, featuring her compositions for string quartet, voice, kankle and piano. Simona’s music is intertwined with jazz, chamber orchestral music, the kankle sound, and the melodies of popular music. During the event, S.Smirnova performed Lithuanian folk songs and works by contemporary authors.

Today, Lithuanians in Chicago also joined the Lithuanian Tricolor Sea World Campaign. Without fleeing the wintry winter north in Chicago, Lithuanians poured a snowy hill into Marquette Park, on which Lithuanian tricolor flourished during the festival.
