Ieva Paliokaitė, an emergency physician at the Kaunas Clinics of the Lithuanian Health Sciences Hospital, says more patients were received from December 24 to 26 than usual. And while there was certainly no shortage of work during the holidays, he admits that doctors are looking forward to New Year’s Eve with greater anxiety.
I have more patients
I. Paliokaitė worked with feverish patients from December 25 to 26, something that was not lacking in the Emergency Clinic on holidays. This, according to the doctor, is not surprising given the increasing number of coronavirus infections in the country.
The emergency doctor says that his colleagues did not lack work either, because not only the fever but also people with various ailments approached the doctors:
“Colleagues said there were enough heavier patients on December 24-25. We have both a ward and trauma patients. There were also serious therapeutic conditions (heart failure, chest pain, heart attacks) both daily and during the holidays. And on December 26, while I was working, I was quiet until the evening. There was more traffic in those first days. “
According to I. Paliokaitė, it is common for more patients to arrive after the weekend or at the end of the week, but the holidays were an exception, because the doctors had no shortage of work in the middle of the week:
“Those flows around the world fluctuate so much that in the middle of the week there is a slightly lower flow of patients and a further increase, only the week of Christmas was an exception. He may have agreed that the condition of patients is deteriorating and that all pandemics on the side of the pandemic are getting worse. “
Kraupi accident in Kaunas
As one of the biggest holiday disasters, the doctor mentions an accident in Kaunas on Christmas night, when a man driving at high speed and fleeing from the police collided with a car on a sidewalk.
“A person working the night shift was injured when a speeding police driver had a car accident. It is such a high profile event in society and in the media, and more speeches and attention from our colleagues. “
According to the portal “What’s Happening in Kaunas”, after a BMW car hit a pole, its parts fell 100 meters away, the engine fell and the chassis broke. According to readers of the portal “What’s Happening in Kaunas”, the driver of the car, with his signs of life, was taken to the Kaunas clinics by ambulances.
It is assumed that the speed of the car could have been considerable, in the photos sent to the portal “What’s happening in Kaunas” you can see that the speedometer mark has reached the mark of 150 km / h in a damaged car.
According to witnesses, after witnessing this traffic accident at night, the car flew at high speed down the Raudondvaris highway at around 2 pm and was pursued by several police teams.

Internal conflicts are feared to increase
I. Paliokaitė does not hide that doctors also look forward to New Year’s Eve. It is feared that people will get caught up in domestic conflicts and hurt each other when they celebrate at home.
“Since those holidays are now more at home, we fear that domestic conflicts and domestic violence will arise. We hear from the police that there is an increase during that pandemic. We are anxious for the festive night so that domestic injuries do not increase,” fears the doctor .
In order to make vacations safe and healthy for those closest to us, the doctor urges us to act responsibly and take care of our health and that of others:
“First of all, we must be safe, even when celebrating at home, not to drink alcohol, to be moderate and not to eat, to avoid poisoning.
And of course, be careful with explosives, firecrackers, because there will probably still be the urge to go out into the yard for someone. We have already had injuries during these weeks from careless handling of pyrotechnics.
The biggest thing I saw was a leg injury. Only the remains of an explosive or its fireworks did not detail the leg, tibia and fracture of the tibia of the patient. If you decide to set off fireworks, do so without drinking and be careful. “
There was no shortage of work at the Antakalnis polyclinic
These days, there was no shortage of work for the doctors at the Vilnius Antakalnis Polyclinic. During the main holidays of the year, the Antakalnis Polyclinic treated more than 1,200 patients and will also operate during the New Year, according to a press release.
The Antakalnis Polyclinic worked regularly during the main festivities of the year. According to the decision of the Antakalnis polyclinic, services were provided to patients in St. On Christmas days, it was also decided to work during Christmas. Managers say that decision was made in response to the situation in the country and this decision has paid off.
According to the director of the polyclinic, the uninterrupted work of the polyclinic was necessary these days, because both in Vilnius and throughout the country, it is increasingly difficult for patients to reach the doctor. “We reviewed the vacation statistics and found that patients needed services every day.
We received an average of 250 calls, fever surgeries, and doctors consulted 19 COVID patients at home every day. The patients also had the opportunity to perform COVID-19 PCR tests, ”says Evaldas Navickas, Director of the Antakalnis Polyclinic.
Febrile Holiday Services A Must
During the holidays, the doctors of the Antakalnis Polyclinic, after evaluating the patient’s condition, invited him to come and perform instrumental or laboratory examinations and a more detailed examination.
“I received the patients in the fever rooms on December 26. In fact, the need for these services is enormous. The patients have a fever and feel unwell. Normally, these patients went to the emergency departments during outpatient visits. hours, and this time we provide help here and now in the outpatient clinic. This is how we help our colleagues in hospitals fight on the front lines of COVID-19, “says Raimonda Kungytė, Head of the Center for Occupational Medicine and Aeronautical Medicine of the Antakalnis Polyclinic.
Infectious disease doctor Alina Voinič, along with two family doctors, consulted patients with fever on Sunday.
“We had a total of 15 patients in the fever room. Of these, 2 were sent to the hospital for treatment after assessing their deteriorating health status. Pneumonia was diagnosed in 10 patients and the treatment was adjusted. They undergo treatment at home. Under normal conditions, the 15 patients would be overwhelmed by the hospital’s admissions department, ”said A. Voinič.
Antakalnis polyclinics will also operate during the New Year
The Antakalnis polyclinic plans to work on New Years days as well. “We are currently planning how we will work and what assistance we will provide on New Year’s Day and January 2-3,” says E. Navickas.
A detailed work program will be available on the Antakalnis Polyclinic website. Patients who need help on holidays should contact the Antakalnis Polyclinic Registry 85 2342515
Injuries caused by fireworks
We remind you that the news portal tv3.lt also wrote about possible injuries from careless handling of fireworks not only on New Year’s Eve.
Orthopedic traumatologist Simonas Sereika, a doctor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Vilnius Republican University Hospital, says that fireworks generally damage the hands and eyes.
“It happens that the face, the eyes, the ears and the drums explode. And for those who already come to our surgery department, a finger amputation is also necessary, “says the doctor.
Left without fingers
The doctor is glad that hand injuries from various explosions have decreased in recent years, but each year about 10 people have to be rescued, who suffer serious injuries from careless handling of fireworks, which, according to S. Sereika, they are extremely difficult to deal with.
Usually without the pyrotechnic igniting and shooting into the air, people attack to inspect it and touch or don’t throw firecrackers and explode only in the hands, causing patients to reach surgeons with their fingers torn off.
“It happens that he suffers mechanical and chemical trauma at the same time. They are very serious. And how does that trauma occur? As a rule, people get drunk during the holidays, light fireworks and fail to shoot them.
And then they bring us those broken fingers, as a rule, they are usually the fingers of the right hand. The most important are the very important fingers, the second and third fingers, and the thumbs, which alters the function of the hands, ”says S. Sereika.
Low quality fireworks
Another cause of disaster is low-quality fireworks. According to S. Sereika, the so-called firecrackers, which people light while holding them in their hands, are especially dangerous:
“It’s not the fireworks that get up and shoot, other injuries come from them, those fireworks can hit the face.
The most dangerous are matches. Because the reaction, usually due to alcohol, slows down, people don’t have time to throw them away and they explode in the hand. “
The doctor recalls that significant injuries were faced a few years ago when so-called explosions appeared on the market, which may seem completely harmless, but if used incorrectly, the consequences can last a lifetime.
“I remember a couple of years ago we saw a lot of fireworks exploding in our hands, injuries, it was a shoddy party. Let’s say last year there were not so many disasters, “recalls S. Sereika.
Extremely severe treatment
According to the doctor, the treatment of injuries caused by fireworks is extremely complicated, since in some cases reconstructions are even necessary. This treatment can last several months.
“We can’t do miracles, but if you come with a firecracker exploding in your hands, the fingertips are missing, then what we can do is clean the chemical residue, wash the wounds and sew the remaining fingers.
We cannot recover lost tissue. Sometimes, if there are major defects, we apply rebuilds later. Those chemical wounds heal a little bit more, which is the week that people spend in the surgery department.
Sometimes limbs need to be rebuilt. If you need to rebuild something to length, it is especially relevant to the thumbs, it is several stages of operations, but it is fixed. Then the plastic is made, so the treatment can last several months ”, warns the doctor.
