Lithuanians don’t want to have a holiday on Easter weekend? Resort hotels have no hope of making money

Some entrepreneurs in the accommodation sector are not hiding – operating with limited capacity – is even more profitable than living at a loss.

Arrivals will be accepted, but not many expected

Juliet, the owner of the holiday home Verona in Palanga, says that there are Easter tourists every year and that they are usually “full”, but this year, although the government removed some of the traffic restrictions, the businessman does not have high expectations. .

It is true, add little by little that they already receive calls to make reservations, only until now, especially for the summer.

“I already ask for August, yes, but people don’t call Easter yet, they don’t expect it. I still do not make reservations for the spring, although people are usually full at Easter.

But now what you can know here, maybe, if it opened as of the 16th, that’s fine, but that’s if right after Easter it will stop and close again. You can’t really know what it will be like here now, ”said Palanga, who is hopeless for Easter weekend.

Juliet adds that after the restrictions were partially lifted, some vacationers applied for accommodation but then canceled it.

“It is more to come to Palanga now, but only so that few people are looking for accommodation by the sea,” says the owner of the villa.

However, if residents are allowed to move more actively and come to the resort over Easter weekend, the businesswoman says she will not change the price of accommodation to attract more vacationers.

“I still count more so that it is better to leave the villa empty than for several people to come and I have to pay taxes for them, as is the case in Palanga.

Of course, I accept anyone who wants and comes, but I do not allow prices anyway, because then I have more expenses than income, I can earn a few euros “, says Juliet.

According to her, all security requirements are in place for tourists who want to come to the villa at this time, but this has little effect on the decision of those who are considering coming.

“After the opening of the municipalities, it is clear that we are going to wait for the arrival, because even so, the people of Palanga do not have many vacations with the people of Palanga, more people come to rest from other places. Vilnius residents can go to hotels to live more in Vilnius ”, laments the businessman.

Working on one foot is a “useless thing”

Rimantas Šimkevičius, the director of the Royal Spa Hotel in Birštonas, says that he could open the door until Easter only if all the services offered in the holiday home were allowed to be provided.

“Spa and pool services are now forbidden, and we don’t really provide accommodation, because, well, imagine what is the purpose of coming to the forest in Birštonas for an overnight stay and breakfast in the room? Absolutely none. It’s just not we can do even more loss-making activities, even though we already exist at a loss, without generating income but at a cost.

We do not really think about Easter, because we do not even think to start working until we have the permits to carry out our activities in full. Because otherwise we will only suffer even greater losses than the current ones ”, the hotel manager does not hide.

R. Šimkevičius adds that it is impossible to provide accommodation services in cities, but it may be worth it, but it is impossible to maintain a 150-room recreation complex on accommodation income alone.

“I understand that when people go to live in the center of Vilnius, it is really understandable. But when you are in Birštonas, in nature, well, it does not make sense. After the first quarantine, we still try to organize those nights, but it does not have meaning: the costs are huge, the workload is huge and everyone is still dissatisfied, ”says R. Šimkevičius.

It is not necessary for a family to rest

Vytautė, the owner of the “Ežero namai” farm that offers accommodation services in the Prienai district, also says that she does not plan to receive visitors this year for Easter.

“We have stopped our activities now and we have not resumed them yet. We also did not expect anything during Easter, and there were no people interested this weekend either. At the moment, there may still be only one family farm together, this larger farm is not very necessary for a family, ”says Vytautė.

According to the owner of the farm, there are usually those who want to spend Easter in nature, by the lake, but it is usually a larger family, not a single home. And coming, like most tourists, for example, from Vilnius, is more difficult at the moment.

However, according to Vytautė, restrictions on movement by municipalities are not the only reason the farm’s gates have been closed to visitors until now.

“I can’t say that there were no people interested in coming during the quarantine. But we Lithuanians still want to circumvent the law in one way or another, so whoever applied still asked that more people be invited, not just one family unit. .

(…) We will most likely resume operations if we allow several households to come together. Because, anyway, our house is not very small, it is usually too expensive for a family, it is not necessary for more people and they still cannot meet more people, ”says Vytautė.

Not even advertising works

According to Artūras Mačiulaitis, director of the Artis Centrum Hotel, located in Vilnius Old Town, this year the hotel tried to attract customers for the Easter weekend with more active advertising. However, it turns out that Vilnius residents are also reluctant to change the environment for the holidays.

“We will probably stop advertising, because there is no demand at all, only a few have appeared. It is for so many things that it is not even worth doing something.

Although Easter has never been a celebration when people go to another city, it is more of a family celebration when many stay at home, ”says A. Mačiulaitis.

According to the hotel manager, Easter is clearly still a family holiday; Even in the older years, the flow of customers over Easter generally did not increase, but simply decreased.

“We business hotels still feel like about a week before, a week after Easter, business stopped us a bit. Still, everyone is more reunited with families, not much and planning business trips, and the tourist season in the spring at this time has generally not started.

This year, well, we tried to play with that ad more, hoping to attract people, but that’s not very important to anyone, ”shared A. Mačiulaitis.

After all, many even parents have not seen in a few months, not much who needs such hotels.
