“Probably the most important thing is that great emotional impact, because I will not see the family, I will not be able to go home where I have not been for half a year. My mother even cried after the government meeting, but I tried to calm her down,” said Paulius Mačiulaitis, a student at the University of Bristol, in the Delfi Day program.
“Now I am alone, I am stuck in London, I do not know where to spend Christmas and this festive period, because I have no relatives or close people here, and now a level 4 coronavirus system has been introduced in London: people cannot go out from his place of residence. “Since I live in Bristol, which is three hours from London, I don’t know if I will be able to go back to my city,” he said.
The boy fears that the money spent on the trip will not be recovered.
“I had to buy tickets to London, all airports are outside London, the trip to Luton airport would have taken another 2 hours. I had to travel on more than one train, not just one bus, so I certainly won’t get my money, and public transport in the UK is quite expensive. I also think it will not be possible to get the money back from the flights or the process will be very difficult, “said P. Mačiulaitis.
Looking for other ways to return
According to the temporary president of the Lithuanian community, Alvija Černiauskaitė, those who did not find out on Sunday and rushed to the airport in the morning reacted with particular pain to the new restrictions.
“Some went for very serious reasons: to a funeral or to visit critically ill people. Of course, those who went on vacation to spend Christmas with relatives also reacted painfully,” he said.
According to her, there are people who get stuck in London after arriving here only a few days, as well as those who return to Lithuania from other countries on joint flights.
“We were approached by several families returning from hot countries and had to fly to Lithuania tomorrow and the next day via London. They are currently coordinating with the airlines to possibly fly through Paris or Frankfurt.”
According to A. Černiauskaitė, Lithuanians in the UK who have not been able to return to Lithuania are interested in how they could return in other ways.
“There were some comments in Lithuanian groups about how it would be possible to travel by truck or otherwise, but France was closed for 48 hours and people were waiting. Currently it is reported that the goods will be able to ship. It is not yet clear how the goods will behave. Lithuanians in the UK, ”he said on Delfi Day.
Warns of planned trips
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Marius Skuodis, emphasizes that flights from Lithuania to the UK are not restricted, but the specific decisions will depend on the airlines.
“If the planes don’t get to Lithuania, it’s a question of how many planes could get out,” he said on the “Delfi diena” show.
According to the minister, there are currently only a few countries left in the EU that have not introduced restrictions on flights from the UK. In the near future a consensus will be sought among Member States on what to do with the movement of people.
“Medical experts are currently speaking in Brussels. The question is what the virus is, what variant or the standard tests we use allow us to recognize it. When medical experts express their opinion, coordinated action by Member States is needed so that we can relaunch the movement, “he explained.
The minister warns that while Lithuania remains one of the most difficult situations in the world due to the coronavirus, travel planners may face further restrictions.
“We know that recognizing Lithuania as a very affected country, with all the consequences that this entails, can also have consequences for Lithuanians who travel to other countries”, warned M. Skuodis.
