Lithuanian rower disqualified for two years: my conscience is clear

Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency (LAA) on the role of athletes in 2020 August 19 – out of competition: the substance found in the collected sample was declared hygienic on September 15. Since 2017 January 1 Hygiene was included in the Prohibited List of the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) as a beta-2 agonist of the S3 group. This material is prohibited both in competition and out of competition.

According to the rowing team doctor Mantvydas Šilkūnas, hygiene is a natural substance found in plants. It is a natural stimulant that is present in both stimulant supplements and weight loss supplements. Generally speaking, hygiene can raise the heart rate and thus stimulate blood circulation. Hygiene can be present in the body for a very short time, with a half-life of several hours. According to M. Silkūnas, the effect of hygiene in rowing is very limited, as it only complements other substances and one should not be used as a stimulant.

“Rowing requires both aerobic and anaerobic exercise, so the short-term effect of hygiene does not confer any advantage on rowers,” commented M. Šilkūnas. “The way in which hygiene enters the body is possible through food, because there are studies with coffee, fruit, in which the dose of hygiene is not high, as in the body of an athlete, which is minimal.”

“I knew that an athlete taking cold medicine could get a positive doping test result, so he always chose his medicines very carefully, only buying them after consulting a doctor,” said I. Adomavičiūtė. – It wasn’t until I found out about the violation that I began to verify the composition of all the supplements I was using. But we didn’t find that material. “

2020 Nov 30 The LAA provided a letter corroborating the athlete’s suspicion. In response to this letter, I. Adomavičiūtė emphasized that the main origin of hygiene is different plants: the substance is widespread in plants and even in some nutrients and medicines, especially in traditional Chinese medicine and food culture. This substance is also found in sweet apple (fruit of Anon).

Anono fruit is also sold in Lithuania, it is even recommended to eat fruit daily, and various recipes can be found on the internet on how anono fruit is prepared and used in daily food production.

“In response to the LAA’s argument that I. Adomavičiūtė is a highly qualified athlete who has heard specialized training, it can be countered that athletes should monitor the ingredients of the drugs or food supplements used, but there is no education on suspected exotics fruits, spices, roots and other foods. This circumstance testifies that the subjective element of guilt in the athlete’s behavior can be explained in favor of the athlete: a relatively slight degree of guilt must be applied to her, “said the athlete’s lawyer Salomėja Zaksaitė.

Hygiene hides under various names, including lotus root or wild ginger, which is widely used in Asian cuisine; It is generally possible to consume this prohibited substance without any significant intention or negligence when eating Asian food.

The athlete does not hide the fact that she is on vacation in Thailand, does not shy away from buying various Asian semi-finished products, which she likes to make Thai soup according to several, among which the ingredients are wild ginger. The athlete is seen on August 14. In the evening he had dinner at a Chinese food tavern, had green tea with ginger a couple of days later, and even later ate Thai pasta. The next morning they checked her for doping. “Consequently, there is a good possibility that the substance has entered the body due to ingested food. Of course, after a positive interest in doping tests for Asian cuisine, the athlete refused,” said S. Zaksaitė.

The lawyer pointed out that hygiene can occur between food supplements without mentioning this particular substance on the label. Most of these supplements have been sold as weight loss supplements or energy supplements.

“5 months of uncertainty”, I. Adomavičiūtė named the period from September until the announcement of the LAA decision. – I lived a long time, I woke up at night and went online to look for various information on hygiene. It all seemed like a terrible dream that I can’t wake up from. So far, it’s hard to believe it happened, but my conscience is clear, because I didn’t really buy any supplements that specifically banned the substance. “

“It can be stated that I. Adomavičiūtė, conducting a detailed analysis of the scientific and other literature, provided important information that will help stop other anti-doping rule violations,” S. Zaksaitė has no doubts. – It is believed that the precedent of I. Adomavičiūtė will serve as a lesson to most athletes, especially those who like Asian cuisine, oriental products or exotic fruits. An athlete’s case should also encourage food supplement manufacturers to take a closer look at labels and always indicate that so-called natural substance hygiene can cause a positive doping test. “

February 8 I. Adomavičiūtė heard the decision of the Anti-Doping Infractions Commission: disqualification for 2 (two) years. Its period will be extended from 2020. September 15 and ends in 2022. September 15

This decision nullified all Athlete competition results from Sampling (August 19, 2020) to Athlete Temporary Suspension (September 15, 2020).

Dainius Pavilionis, President of the Lithuanian Rowing Federation (LIF), states that this is an extraordinary event in the history of Lithuanian rowing, as rowers always comply with anti-doping requirements. According to the LIF president, I. Adomavičiūtė is not a normal person, she has become a five-time world champion in various age groups, meeting the norm for the 2019 Olympics.

The president of the Federation believes that the athlete did not aim to violate the anti-doping rules, especially when she already entered the Lithuanian Olympic team and has gone through a difficult path towards her achievements.
