The automatic parcel delivery method is widely used in the world, but Lithuania has not had such possibilities so far, says Asta Sungailienė, Lithuanian Post Director General.
According to her, the implementation of the project is not short: the purchase, the construction processes, the equipment installation process in progress. Only the first phase of the project started on Monday.
“There will be three main types of teams here. The first, ready to work, is an automated line for small shipments of up to 5 kg. Already installed, a line for large shipments up to 30 kg is waiting for the software to be fully released. The third is the letter distribution line, which classifies and divides letters, ”says A. Sungailienė.
The heavy duty line is currently being tested. It is scheduled to launch at the end of the year, which is said to increase the efficiency of courier delivery.
Less staff will be needed
The Vilnius Logistics Center will employ 200 to 300 people. About a couple hundred employees currently work here. However, the number of employees that will be required for package distribution is less than usual, the LP manager could not name it yet.
“During peak hours, our processes require up to 300 employees. It is obvious that the distribution works that were and are currently carried out by people, when the whole program is fully launched, will no longer be carried out in other places in Lithuania. These functions will no longer be performed by our employees as they will simply disappear.
The change in the number of employees is not named precisely. We are currently in the process of informing and consulting with the workers’ representatives and the works council, and when they are finished, these figures will be known ”, he says.
Shipping prices will remain stable
She believes that the new processes should not affect shipping prices. “In no way would I see that this investment could have a negative impact on our prices for our clients,” he added. Delphi she assures.
“The efficiency that we achieve through process automation is primarily driven by the return on investment of the program. At the same time, we live in an environment of increasing costs: the increase in remuneration is extremely important to us, part of the benefits will be directed to the improvement of working conditions. This will allow us to keep prices stable for some time, “A. Sungailaitienė told reporters.
The speed of the processes will increase 2-3 times.
The first conveyor, to be activated at the fulfillment center on Monday, will distribute shipments of up to 5 kg. During the process, the device will weigh the shipment, measure the volume, scan the barcode, and direct it in the required direction, according to the additional planned route of the shipment. Shipments will move 380 addresses on the conveyor, during the work shift they will be distributed to the final delivery point – there will be no intermediate pre-redistribution stations – the shipment will travel directly to the recipient, writes LP.
The operation of the conveyor on today, he points out, will be especially important during the Christmas period, when the flow of shipments doubles and most are small shipments, up to 5 kg, which will be distributed by the conveyor.
The first small consignment conveyor will allow the distribution of around 12 thousand. Shipping. The distribution process will be faster, more accurate and completely digitized. The fully automated distribution process at the new logistics center is scheduled to operate in 2021. in the spring.
It is estimated that after the transition to smart distribution, the speed of Lithuania’s postal logistics processes will increase 2-3 times.
With the current capacity, Lithuanian Post distributes around 100,000. shipments and the same number of letters. The fully operational automated distribution equipment will allow Lithuanian Post to distribute nearly 20,000. Shipping and 30 thousand. emails.
At the time, manual mail required redistribution of each letter or package 7-8 times, while smart redistribution would require 2-3 redistributions.

Centralized process
As the director of LP points out, the process is centralized. This means that after sending the package in one part, it will immediately be directed only to the central point, that is, the central logistics center in Vilnius. Here, the shipment will be automatically assigned to the end point – the area served by a particular letter or courier.
“The speed is increasing very strongly, because the new lightweight parcel machine can disperse about 10,000 in an hour. Shipments when fully operational. To do this, today we need 6 full-time employees,” he says.
The total value of the project is about 24 million. EUR. Investments in smart equipment at the Vilnius Logistics Center will amount to more than 11 million. 8 million euros. Euros were allocated for the construction of the building.
