People who have experienced the most life-threatening cardiovascular diseases in Lithuania are admitted to the cardiology resuscitation department of the Santara Clinics. Sadly, a patient’s life has changed forever.
“The patient is a relatively young person, in his 60s. You have had an acute myocardial infarction. There was an acute clinical death at home. The family members were resuscitated, with the arrival of an ambulance, resuscitation continued and cardiac activity was restored, taken to our hospital for further treatment, ”says Giedrius Navickas, Head of the Cardiology Resuscitation Department.
The man did not die. But the prognosis is sad, due to prolonged resuscitation: damaged brain.
“It just came to our attention then. People have heart disease, a lot of heart attacks occur, especially in people of working age. And sometimes there are such sad cases when sudden clinical deaths occur at home and it is not always possible. save them successfully ”, continues the interlocutor.
More than half of all deaths recorded in Lithuania are due to cardiovascular diseases. This is much higher than the EU average of 37%. According to cardiologists, we still cannot take care of our health.
“There are the main risk factors: increased blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, smoking, alcohol consumption. These are the main risk factors. Still, people do not pay attention to their lifestyle. This is the first. Secondly, he does not believe in a doctor, but he believes in other means. There is no cure. Another reason, it must be recognized that availability is not enough for outpatient cardiological care “, says Prof Pranas Šerpytis, a cardiologist from Clínicas Santara.
Very often, cardiovascular disease kills the middle-aged and elderly Lithuanians. They die of more than all forms of cancer combined. And nearly a quarter of the dead are Lithuanians of working age.
Due to the fact that we die of heart disease much more often than the average European, the average life expectancy of Lithuanians is significantly decreasing. On average, Lithuanians live at least five years less than Europeans. Its average life expectancy is more than 80 years. We turn 80, of course there are exceptions, but women often celebrate it.
Unfortunately, on the occasion of World Heart Day during the pandemic, our doctors are also saddened by the increase of almost a tenth of the number of deaths of compatriots due to cardiovascular diseases each year. The number of such deaths increased almost as much as last year Lithuanians died from coronavirus: by two thousand.
“The whole world estimates that about 5 percent. Those excessive deaths from cardiovascular diseases are related to the indirect damage of the COVID pandemic, and this means that quarantine, there was less access to medical care, services redistributed to fight the infection. , the patients themselves feared. And this led to more deaths outside the hospital, “says Sigita Glaveckaitė, president of the Lithuanian Heart Association.
Panevėžys On the occasion of World Heart Day in various cities of the country, health professionals urge Lithuanians to control their blood pressure – the prophet of heart disease.
“Normal, thank you! – Excellent. – Really great. – So what are you doing to improve that pressure? “Nothing, I’m laughing, I’m going to eat in the canteen,” says Rozalija from Panevėžys.
“I measure every day. I have a device similar to this and I measure. It’s interesting to me, ”says 80-year-old Rimantas.
Some say they check-in often at home, others less frequently.
“Maybe the heart or pulse is bigger. Then I’ll measure,” says Jolanta, 49, from Panevėžys.
“What makes that pressure jump here? – Maybe from the food. – Do you like to eat delicious? “I like pork, I like it very much,” says Virginia, a 74-year-old woman from Panevėžys.
Cardiologists say that it is necessary to control the pressure and treat if necessary.
“If we could maintain blood pressure and later in the year, that pressure would increase. If we maintain a normal 140-90, the diastolic 90 would not exceed, we would reduce the number of strokes by 10 times. Myocardial infarction 6 times. It is only on this subject how much “, assures Prof. P. Šerpytis.
And a cheerful woman from Panevėžys, who did not want to reveal her age, reveals the recipe for her smile.
“There are strokes in the family, there are strokes, there are heart attacks. That goes, a little was. They no longer exist, I have lost loved ones. But they did not live healthy, they smoked, they had diabetes. And I don’t have that. Yes, I don’t smoke, ”says Nijolė from Panevėžys.
Smoking is one of the main causes of cardiovascular disease. Doctors urge Lithuanians to smoke and drink less, exercise more, measure blood pressure and, if they feel the slightest pain in their chest, not to hold a hand, but to see a doctor.
